I've see a lot of threads on changing the gearing from 3.15 to lower. I also heard that some earlier models used the lower gearing. I only thought it was the touring models though. I did find a couple posts that mentioned what rpms at mph with stock vs. 3.37 gears. I have a dial tach so its hard to read the exact rpm, but I am at 3100-3200 rpms at 70 mph in 5th. According to what I read, stock is somewhere around 2,900 and lower gearing is 3,150. Is this correct for my year Dyna though?
Not sure if this helps or not, do a search here for changing the front drive sprocket. Way easier than cracking open the tranny and changing gears. I think most posts from people who have done it go to a 30 tooth front sprocket. I think the stock one is 32 but I may be wrong on the numbers.
That is where I saw the info about the rpms. I'm not talking about internal gearing. I'm talking about the compensator and clutch basket gearing or the front belt sprocket. I belive the rpms change when you change the compensator gears. I'm just trying to verify if the earlier Dynas or FXDX models had the lower gearing. I'm not ready to pull off my primary cover to look.
If you are running 3200 RPM at 70 in 5th, it sounds like you have a 30T already.
I have a 31T and run right at 3000 at 70 in 5th. This is with a 70T rear sprocket/pulley
I read a sticky on another forum about the primary gearing. It says that there was two different gearing offered from '99-'01, but it only mentions the touring bikes. It states that the early EFI bikes had 3.37 gearing vs. the 3.15 of the carb bikes. The primary gearing was 25t/36t for 3.15 vs. 24t/37t for the 3.37 gearing. It doesn't mention the Dynas though. I know the FXDX was supposed to be the sport model, so I was wondering if it too used the lower gearing stock. This would make the difference that I see. If not, than one of the two previous owners must have changed either the primary gearing or the 30t belt pulley.
