Default Wide Glide Air Intake Question

I will purchase a 2012 Wide Glide very soon and would like some feedback from riders concerning the forward controls and the stock air intake. So, I have read so many reviews on the bike and have sat on them, along with other HD with forward controls. I have a concern, when I sit on a bike with forward controls, the air cleaner is in the direct path of my leg extension to the right control. I had my friend sit on the bike, who is about 5 inches taller than me and he had the same issue...the air intak touches around the knee area. I never read any reviews that stated this to be an issue, so I may be over thinking this. This very well may not be an issue when both feet are up and riding. So, my question is, does any Wide Glide rider or rider of an HD with forward controls have a problem with the location of the air intake? BTW, I am 5' 7" and sit perfectly comfortable on the bike, with feet easily flat on the ground. Thank you.

The stock intake should not be a problem. Lots of options out there on that topic, so don't let that hold you back!

I am the same height as you, 5'7". My knee is rubbing against the stock air box. I installed a RSD air box. It is smaller in diameter however it comes off the the engine more. My knee hits the RSD even more and is worst because it has an edge rather than the smooth curve of the stock box. you would probably be better off with a air cleaner that projects forward in order to eliminate this issue...
On another note... At our height the seat is positioned about one inch to far back. I always slide forward once my feet leave the ground. Once forward all is well.
I hope this info has helped...

I'm 6'4 and my right leg hit the stock intake as well as the RSD I have now. The RSD actually sticks out further than the stock unit. I don't really find it a problem or bothersome at all. At times I even ride with shorts on and my leg rests against it when riding, it gets warm at slow speeds and at stops but again no big deal, at least to me.

I'm 6 feet tall and I thought the same thing before I got mine. Yes my knee hits it but I don't even notice it while riding. (stock air box)

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. I am now sure the FXDWG is a great decision.

Was a big problem on mine. Couldn't get right foot properly on that peg and couldn't get my foot onto the brake pedal.

I put 1" peg extenders on and fitted an S&S air cleaner as they have a slimmer profile.

I am short as well and changed to a rsd air cleaner and I basically just got used to it. When I first baught the bike it was a bit bothersome but after riding for a while I just got used to it and now seem to be just fine. Good Luck and congrats

I am only an inch taller than you and I had some trouble keeping my feet on the pegs for long distances at freeway speeds. I put heel rests and kick back plates on mine, and now I can ride comfortably all day long. In fact, I did a 1500 mile trip last fall and I was never sore or overly tired.

The previous owner must have worn chaps with zippers or conches though because there were some scratches on the inner band where the writing is on mine. Solution: I have never worn chaps. Lol.

Another option is the Low Profile OUTLAW HiFlow 587 Air Cleaners. Over 20 styles and all fo them are smaller diameter than stock and stick out from the engine LESS than stock.
