I just received my XIED's and installed them on my '12 Wide Glide. The rear was easy as I grounded to the motor where the battery ground connects to; however, the front was more challenging.
I grounded it to the bolt that goes through the front of the bike frame. I ran a longer bolt through it and it seems fine, but is this a strong enough ground for the front to work from?
That must be some new set up for the 2012's. I never had to ground mine. I don't really understand that since they are just pigtailing between the 02 sensor and ECM. I would think that would be good enough?
I just installed a set a few weeks ago. There was no grounding involved (except the beer that I had to sit on the ground while I plugged everything in).
Yeah, when we did my buddy's bike, it was plug and play and that was it. Took all of 3 minutes to install...not even enough time to enjoy a Skoal dip! Go figure mine has to be a 1/4 tin install...most of which time was spent figuring out where the hell to ground both ends to!
2012's use the FL-XIED or FL VIED and yes the 2012 FL-XIED has a ground wire on it

2006-2011 Dyna's use the two wire Bosch O2 sensor. This is the same two wire sensor used on most Harley-Davidson motorcycle models.
2012 Dyna's use the 4-wire heated Delphi O2 sensor. This is the same sensor used on 2010 and later Harley-Davidson Touring bikes.
So for those of you with pre '12 XIED's what yours looks like is irrelevant.
Should work as I have a 2012 Super Glide Custom and I had to ground mine. I bought some extra ground wire and spliced it in to the front one and ran the front ground to my battery but your set-up should work also.
thats where i have mine only to the front side, tested with a meter and it gave me a good ground on the test and so far no problems in the first 100 miles.
I grounded mine using one of the small bolts that holds the bracket for the front exhaust pipe to the bottom of the engine. Yours should be fine, it is all good metal there.
