The other day, I went to start my bike, and when I hit the ignition, I heard a loud hollow sounding bang, along with a flash out of the tailpipe. I was standing to the side of the bike. The bang loud enough to set off some PTSD induced cursing.
I let go of the button, then hit it again and it started up just fine. The bike, a 03 FXDWG ran perfectly. Yesterday it did it again, and after hitting the ignition one more time, it started up and ran like a top.
Any idea as to what is causing this bad *** backfire?
if it back fires when its running it is usually related to timing. my guess is some gas is leaking down while its sitting. Do you twist some throttle when your start the bike. maybe the floats sticking at times? is your pet **** operated by vacuum?
The pet **** is a valve used to turn the gas on and off. They sometimes have an "off", "on", and "reserve" setting and are typically located below the gas tank between the tank and carb.
Like ynots said, you are most likely getting some leak down of fuel into the cylinders, which could be why you are getting the "backfire" on initial startup. I'm guessing it's probably in the carb floats.
