Default Cams installed

I got my cams installed over the weekend, a pair of chain-drive S&S 583's. Everything went smoothly, I had studied the procedure quite a bit and there were no surprises. The hardest part was.... really there were no hard parts, just time-consuming. I went slow and followed the checklist I had made in advance, and was up and running again after maybe 8 hours of work.

I removed my exhaust (of course) but also removed the right-side footpeg and break lever (mid controls). I probably could have left them on but I like a clear path to what I'm working on.

I had to send my girlfriend to the store to get a box of large binder clips, because I couldn't find any at my office and couldn't think of a better way to keep the lifters in place. The binder clip wires really are perfect for the job.

I bought the Heartland cam bearing puller/installer set, for $115, and it worked very well. I'll probably sell it before long.

Kinda surprised me that the stock cams are not machined parts, they're press-fit together out of four or five pieces.

I'm really quite surprised at how differently the bike runs. Especially how it sounds. Not just the idle (which is very different). Quite a bit louder through the whole RPM range, and it has a sharper, more pronounced and slightly deeper tone. I like it very much.

I can't give a good review of the difference in performance yet because I still need to get a decent map into the ECM with the TTS Mastertune. I can say that it runs noticeably stronger from about 2300 RPM up to 4000, which is what I was looking for, but my map sputters quite a bit right now at higher throttle settings so I'll post more details after a few more tuning runs.

Congrats on the successful install. Curious to see how you like the 583s, I almost went with them but was told they are not the bust for built motors, but are a hell of a bolt in cam.

Congrats on a good install. Hope to do mine in the next month. Good to hear you liked the Heartland cam bearing puller/installer set. I just ordered one.

That's pretty much the way I understand it too. I don't plan on getting too wild with my motor. If I do, I'll just have to get some new cams again.

The 585 is a great cam for your motor, I bet.

I forgot to mention, I like the EZ start as well, my bike spins over much easier now when starting. I won't be worried about adding more compression later down the road.

I installed the 583 Easy Starts in my 08 FXDC back in the spring and I have been very satisfied. I had a little bit of that throttle stutter that was mentioned, but it can be tuned out. I really like the sound of the bike now, and it runs noticeably stronger through the middle of the RPM range. And with those changes and remap, I only lost 2 mpg on my overall fuel mileage (without getting a good dyno tune).

No I did not. I went with the boltcutter/SE Adjustable pushrod route, and they come with shorter lower pushrod tubes and longer clips (and all the o-rings).

Definitely saved me a lot of hours, but I don't think I would hesitate to pull the rockers and reuse the pushrods if I were doing it again. I didn't want to mess with removing my tank, was the biggest thing.

So would you say the 583s are a good choice for a "cam only" upgrade? (stock heads/compression/displacement)
