Smile Looking for a dyna

History: I've been doing a lot of reading and love this site. I have been thinking for while about buying a dyna. I've been riding a Kawasaki VN750 (first bike) since 04 and now my wife wants to ride and I've always wanted a harley. I started looking at Ocean State HD last weekend(super nice), and I was planning to stop in at Precision HD this weekend.

Question: To prepare for Precision I went on the website and looked at a couple of used Fatbobs and tried to run a VIN check through cyclechex and cyclevin, but both of them say no records found although they recognize it as a Harley VIN. My question is has anyone ever used those sites to check out a used bike and does anyone know a better way to check history on a bike? I tried an 11 and an 09 with the same result. I thought maybe the 11 was a dealer demo bike, but I doubt the 09 would have been.

On a second question: It appears from the website that Precision has at least one leftover 2011 Fatbob. Given that the 2012 with the 103 is going for 15700 or close to that MSRP with shipping, what does everyone think a fair price for the 2011 would be? I was thinking the 103 upgrade is probably $2000 and even then it's still a year older.

Real hard finding out what invoice is on as Harley. If Harley does kickbacks/incentives to dealers, like car dealers do, I've never heard of it. Even when you do hear stories about how much someone got off a bike, make sure it is a similar bike. There is likely less profit on a Dyna than a Touring bike.

The 103 is a big deal. They are going to have a reeeeeally hard time getting rid of that bike. A fair price may very likely be below cost. Bad news for that dealer, but maybe good news for you. I think you'll have to educate yourself as much as possible, talk to them, make sure they have your phone number, and walkaway. They'll likely have to stew for a while b4 swallowing the necessary deal. My VERY uneducated guess would be to look for $4K off.

Good point regarding the touring bike versus dyna discounts. Also I agree on the 103, my feeling is that later on it will make the bike harder to sell not having it. I don't know if even the SE upgrade is an apple to apple to comparison. I will go see what they have to say, thanks.

A lot of times you can find a Big Bore (96" to 103") install over the winter months for around $1,500 - $2,000 ... give or take (depends on what all it includes) ...

Seems to me that $4,000 is a rather large figure ... personally, I am doubtful they would ever discount a new bike (even last model year) that deeply ... I could be wrong ...

You might see if they would throw in the Big Bore upgrade for the retail price (or a small additional fee if there were some noteworthy additional performance upgrades ... like less than $500) ... if you could keep it at, or less than, the new model year bikes retail pricing you would still come away with a new bike ...

* * *

I got a discount for overseas military personnel when I got my bike new ... else, I would probably have gone for a low miles garage ornament that someone is looking to sell ...

Good luck with your decision ... and welcome to the forum ...

I agree with the 103, throw in that the 2013s are on their way in, and I would shop around hard. You can definitely negotiate, large dealers that have big inventories are more likely to deal, especially at the end of the month when there new inventory bikes come in. But all dealers need new stock and each dealer is allotted an amount of bikes in each family and it depends on what new bikes they currently have in stock, no matter what the year. So all dealers want to move old stock so they get more new bikes in.

As far as dealer invoice vs msrp, checkout http://www.seedealercost.com/powersports and you will get a good idea about their markup. Not that it may help, but it is good to know.

Travel a bit if you need to, and there are some great used dealers out there and in your area. I have heard some nice things about Bob's Mortrcycles in RI.

I just went through all this. Glad to be done.
Good luck.

Thanks for the link dealer cost and the tip on Bob's. I live close to the RI border so I may check him out. I also have Todds on 140 in Bellingham which is really close to me. My only concern with used dealers is where the bike has been and how has it been cared for.

I plan shop hard and see who has the best deal. As was pointed out the big dealers will probably be looking to move bikes more near the end of the month and the end of the summer.

Precision has no new FatBobs, the web site said they do but when I was there this weekend they had nothing but used. Ocean State has two new, but they seem in no hurry to sell anything for anything less than MSRP.

103 without doing anything else besides cams and a/c - pipe obviously isn't really worth the expense to me. You can easily do a 96 with those mods and the 103 only makes like 5-10 more horsepower at MOST at MAX rpm and just about as much torque as those numbers, so if the added cost is worth it to ya, go for it, otherwise save your cash and get accessories for it or a vacation or something.

Update: I am now without a bike as I sold my Kawasaki way faster than I expected which is good until I realized that if this takes a little while for dealers to get hungry I will be without a bike for some of the best riding weather. Looking at used prices I'm really leaning toward new. My wife is now saying just go tell the dealers what you want and see who has the best price. I don't disagree, but I also know some don't have any FXDF in stock. I also got to talking with one of my friends who has a bike with ABS and he thinks I should get it if I can. I think it's rare in the FXDF inventory around here though so I may have to skip it to get a deal soon. When I spoke to Ocean State they told me ABS is special order. If I have to order I will be looking at a 2013 and MSRP I would think. I told the guy at precision who called me today to see what he can find with ABS plus some accessories like bags plus a better seat and back rest for the wife. Now I need to email or call a few others.
