Default Forward Controls on a Super Glide

Is it tough to put forward controls on a Super Glide? All suggestions and tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Depends on the year I guess. I put them on my 99 FXDX and it was a piece of cake......maybe half hour job.

I put some on my '09 FXDC...Pretty easy... Just tuck the old shifter linkage behind the engine bolt...

Not hard at all. Scale of 1-10 it's a 3. Take your time and follow directions. My son's step stool was harder to assemble. If you run into trouble search the forum.

Not sure just how you guys are installing these, but I had my HD forwards installed by the dealer as part of my purchase, and I watched the mechanic do it. He pulled the entire primary off the bike, and it wasn't a 15 minute job! I'd say it took him over an hour. I know, because I was waiting for the bike, and I kept checking the time! Of course, he did it the "right" way, and removed the shifter shaft, etc. I'm never going back to mid controls, so that was fine by me. I've seen a couple buddies who have aftermarket forwards on their bikes, and I don't care for the way they look at all. That little cover sticking out the primary about 2" looks weird to me.

I agree, to do it the right way, requires you to remove the outer primary and take out the shifter shaft, and plug the hole with the supplied cover.

I had to go to floor boards though, because it's damn near impossible to stand up on forward pegs, if you're gonna run over a big pothole or something

There's another thread that shows how to saw the shifter shaft from the back of the inner primary and remove it without taking either case off. Or you can put on the Kuryakyn kit in about an hour and be able to switch back to mids easily. If you go to the HD or Kuryakyn websites you can download the instruction sheets.

The 'right' way is a matter of opinion. The shifter shaft can just be pushed in and then the arm that comes up between the primary and the case can be tucked forward behind an engine bolt that's right there.

This, in my opinion, is the best way to do it for the following reasons; a) it's the easiest, b) you don't have to open your primary which is a whole new can of worms, c) if the owner, be it you or if you sell the bike wants to put the mids back on it's a piece of cake and d) you don't even notice it, brother I'm tellin' you, you'll forget all about it...look at the pics.

By the way, I left my mid pegs on for touring so to have another foot position option. When I'm just around town, I just fold 'em up. Works like a charm!

Thanks to your pics I finally understand what tuck behind the engine bolt means. Just installed reduced reach forward controls(HD) on my 2012 Super Glide Custom(first Harley),plus engine guard from Lindby.Looks great and just the right amount of knee bend, will take a ride in the next day or so to appreciate my not so hard work.
