First - welcome to the club.
Second - great job finding this place after realizing you were given bad advice.
Third - the service manual will be your friend. I use it way more than I ever thought I would. The 'parts' manual is a separate book and also as useful. If has great breakdown photos with all part numbers listed.

How many miles on your 05? Do you know any info what (if anything) has been done about the Cam Chain Tensioners? That's about the only issue you need to worry about. But don't worry, you're not alone. All Twin Cams bikes from 99-06 (except 06 dyna) have the same issue. Do a search and sit back and enjoy the hours of reading.

Here's some advice. Cut your oil filter apart every service and look for small orange pieces. Tensioners are a hard orange plastic.

I can tell this is going to be a fun adventure. Im 32 and i shoulda got a bike 10 years ago im addicted.

Thanks Mike

Ps. is there any other problems with 05's i should address directly? I am very mechanically inclined and like to do my own work.

Yes. On Dyna's from late 05 and 06's the alternator field was bolted not rivited to the compensator spring basket and some the bolts backed out destroying the stator. If you find abnormally large pieces of steel in the primary oil or you have a major elec failer this could be the problem. Fix was to spot weld and/or rivit it togather. Dont know how to confirm yours is welded other than pulling the primary cover.

You can use that plug to drain the oil left in the bottom end. Checking that oil for metal and sludge will tell ya alot about a used bike. Use #565 loctite pipe sealant on it, you don't want to lose it or have it leaking. I'm not sure on the torque for an 05 but 06 up is 120 -144 inlbs.
