flip open side mount license plate bracket conversion to axle mount
So here is the issue I have. I constantly forget to flip the license plate bracket on my 2012 Dyna Wide glide. One of these days I'm going to get pulled over. It may be a stupidity thing. This is my first Harley, I just can't remember to flip out the plate before I ride.
So, I thought about installing an axle mounted license plate bracket. Does someone make an axle mounted license plate bracket for the Dyna wide glide? It would have to be lighted to keep it legal.
Any help would be great.
thanks

Three things to consider:
(2) Does your state require a horizontal mount (like mine does) or permit vertical mounts. If you have to have a horizontal plate, do you mind if it sticks out the side?
(3) do you want it lit all the time? if not, you'll need to install a switch
I bought a side mount from Figure Machine. Quality is not quite as high as Cycle Visions, but very close and it was 1/2 the price ($145) It's originally designed for Sportys, but I called and he worked with me. They cut the slots parallel to the long edge for me so I could mount it horizontally and slide it tight. They'll also drill a 3/4" mount hole instead of the 1/2" shock mount if you like. I didn't want an axel mount
I mounted mine on the right shock bolt so it wasn't sticking out the left side like some alien appendage. Even then it hung about 2 inches outside the mufflers. Horizontal mount, so there's not much you can do, but, I wanted it tighter. So, I had a guy machine a custom bracket - just long enough to clear the brake caliper. Now, the plate tucks in to about 1/8" from the brake rotor ... doesn't get any tighter than that! Now it doesnt stick out any further than the exhaust pipe; blends in with the right side. Will powder coat to match this winter.
I ran the LED wires thru a length of windshield washer hose, down the swing arm and up the frame between the shock and battery box. Just in front of the shock to the underside of the strut, I mounted a waterproof switch I got from eBay . You can't see the switch. I turn on the LEDs at night and keep em off during the day.
