I have a 12 model WG. Just noticed the rear tire has a nail right of center. Its deep- tread above it. I know in my gut I should just get new tire but the tire is new. What do you think of riding w the nail in wo it leaking?
I would at least pull the nail and plug it.... I got a nail back in June, plugged the tire to get home ordered a new tire, when I picked the wheel up from being mounted they gave me the old tire to dispose of, when I got home I checked the plug out from the inside it sealed real good. With a pair of pliers it was hard to pull the plug out, probably could have rode on it for a while...
I can say I did get one plugged before on my sportbike (most / 99.9%) of shops won't do it due to liability. I only did it for a temp fix until I got a new tire.....
Sucks though. Brand new bike + nail = new tire. :'(
My son and I both picked up some metal debris in our neighborhood and we had to drop several hundred dollars to replace a tire on each bike. A plug in a car tire, and the tire will probably go until the tread markers appear. The same would probably happen for a bike tire, but with the stresses and demands on it it's just not a good idea. Have a flat in a car at speed and its time to put on the spare. Have a flat at speed on a bike and its possibly time to call the coroner. Shoot, it's only money, right?
Something to ponder - visit the Dunlap website, they actually state that it is OK to patch a puncture if it is not on the sidewall. Not talking a plug but a proper repair in the inside of the tire.
I know the feeling. I got a nail in my tire at around 300 km. Took it to a shop and they put a plug in. Only single strand not a double like you would in a car tire. I have put on 8000 km on it so far. He told me to bring in rear wheel and he would vulcanize a patch from the inside but i never did.
I have fixed a rear tire on my last bike and it last 10,000 miles till I changed. If it is a front tire I'd say no for sure but it is your choice. I have replaced 2 tires on my SB last year under HD tire warranty, bad luck! The dealer said if it is a rear tire, they patch it. If it is a front tire, they replace. I have no idea
