actually you also have the crash bar in vlack and the upper part of the forks. I believe you also have a black luggage rack... so I'd definitely leave them black.

My concept is to do not just the saddlebags, but the fairing and the lower fairings all one color ... whether black or matching the tins ...

I like the black trim ... have tried to get most of it converted over to black ... just a few parts on the motor/exhaust that are chrome or polish alum ...

I agree with your wife. Your bike is unique and cool as is.

The saddlebag lid gaskets were also wearing out, so I've got new gaskets ... the way I am planning to assemble everything, I am thinking it should vastly improve the water-tight integrity and make the bags much more useful ...

* * *

Since I am filling the holes from the OE hinges ... and since the bags are looking a little rough from a few nicks and dings ... I had decided to re-finish the paint and go ahead and also do the fairing and lower fairings ...

My plan was to color match everything with the tank and fenders (and battery cover and fuse box cover) ... I had been talking to a paint vendor about matching the color, since the maker of the powdercoat does not do liquid coatings ...

When I mentioned to my wife I still need to pick up the color to match the tins, she told me that she didn't think I should color-match the bags and fairing ... she likes it the way it is ...

She thinks I should just get some more gloss black and repaint everything as is ... just freshen it up ...

I was pretty surprised, since I didn't think my wife really had an opinion ...

She does not ride with me ... ever ... and has been known to knock my riding / motorcycle with a derogatory remark from time to time ...

My plan was to basically end up with a monotone Electra Glide / Street Glide look ... with a few minor variations on the theme ...

Her comment was something to the effect that it would be like a guy color matching his belt and shoes ... LoL ...

I've never really been dissatisfied with the current look ...

Oh well ... what say you ...?

Chop, how about a different look. Do the horizontal surfaces in the Pewter/Champaign body color and leave the rest black. To do this the sides of the fenders would need to be painted black and the top of the fairing and saddlebag tops would need to be painted the Pewter/Champaign color. I would then pinstripe the black area with the Pewter/Champaign color. Of course you would also repeat the theme on the tank. That would be classy and unique.

Much like I said earlier, I think you should go two-tone across all the tins. Use a flowing line something like on this CVO, top color would be the silver and the bottom color would be the black or vise versa (not three-four tones like the CVO, just the flow of the line work). Use a pin strip to make the color change, maybe a deep blue or a bold red.

Gotta agree with mistake number1. Second mistake was mentioning you still had to pick up any color. In the future, to avoid any potential conflicts I would suggest just doing, not discussing, unless of course your wife has a keen sense of fashion and color. I like your idea of matching color to bring it all together, but the wife has a point also.

Alright ... here's the deal ...

I'm trying not to pour a ton of money into this task ... since I am rehabbing the bags, I kind of need to 'freshen up' the paint ... the fairing has a couple / few little places that need to be fixed and repainted ...

So, I guess the CVO Street Glide idea would be cool ... if I wasn't trying to go cheap ... if I had a couple grand lying around I might be inclined to try something like that ...

I've already got the prep material, including the primer ... it is down to the base coat and clear ...

I priced out the color match paint, activator and clear top coat ... around $210-$225 ... if I just got gloss black it would drop the price to around $195ish ...

Okay, I guess I don't really want to end up like this ...

I kind of like the Ultra Limited, with the black fairing lowers and the two tone (color over black) fairing ...

I think that might be a lot less involved than doing the CVO-type paint scheme ...

If I did that, I think I'd just paint the bags the color of the tins and call it good ...

Any thought on this concept ...?

* * *

Looks like I am at about 3:1 in favor of color match ...

Thanks for the input fellas ...

I guess this is another way of looking at what I was trying to get across, kinda the same theory. Maybe if you just use a similar line and split the colors only on the fairing and bags, leave the bottom of both black.

I copied you pic and changed it up a little for you (sorry if it looks like i butchered it, not intended) this would work and still fit in you budget.

Before:

After:

I feel that with the black trim on the front fender, the black dash, crash bar, seat and rack already gives your bike a good mix of color flow and the scheme on the bags and fairing I made help it all flow. So you would still save money because you wouldn't have to paint any more then you already plan to. Also, the lines on the bags are applied so you don't have to try and transion between the lid and bag, the lid stays all black.

Looking at your avatar, I think if you take the line around the back of the bag and bow it so it flows to the bottom inside corner it could look good too.
