right, i've done exactly that, media blast and hand paint.

there isn't a hightemp powdercoat available anymore, especially since popularity of ceramic coating.

i looked into that but it isn't cheap and everyone complains about the scratching.

i had mine blasted for about $25 bucks. make sure you sand them before you paint. the first time, i had some kinda rough spots and i thought it was the paint but sometimes the chrome is more difficult to get off and they get on it a little more and it is rougher. i hit it with some 300 or higher i think (not at home but i can tell you later) on a little hand sander. i then made sure it was good and dust free with one of those compressed air computer cleaners (shop air has oil in it) and a microfiber towel.

then i just used krylon hi-temp i bought at home depot. i bought two cans but i didn't use one. i hung it in the garage from the bracket tabs inside the covers. did like three coats. the first doesn't cover much but the other two did. you gotta be carefull w/ runs but i didn't want too much paint on there so when it got hot it cracked or something.

just make sure you hands are good and clean when you put them on the first time before they get hot, any oil will then bake into the paint the first time (maybe use gloves).

i've got a kinda smooth/shiney spot where my pants flap on the front pipe but you don't hardley notice. and i don't think it scratches any less/more easy than ceramic and it way cheaper to fix. even if they look like crap in a year, i light sand them and re-coat for less than $20 bucks.

totally worth it.

btw, you might wanna go w/ the sampsons, i hear the short shots are a little too short and don't make power all that well as a result. i was gonna get the sweepers but i got a really good deal on the pythons from someone from here.

Gettinggreat information like this is what makes this site TOTALLY AWESOME.ThanksWaterman!!!

On my 2002 FXDX, I'm running chrome pipes that I simply degreased with lacquer thinner and painted with high-temp grill paint that I bought from Home Depot!!! Nothing fancy, no BS, and after 10,000 miles, still no problems! They look like the were "store bought".....sometimes it seems like people want to do things in the hardest and most expensive ways possible.

waterman7474, I've got basically the same pipes, I have the V&H Big Shots, and was thinking about doing the same thing.

Did you paint just the shields and tips, or did you paint the actual pipe too?

i didnt want to spend much on my pipes so I found a set of cycle shack's (number in my sig) they were for an 05 or earlier bike but fit fine , for 39 bucks I thought I would try it . I headerwrapped 3/4 of them and left the rear larger baffled pipe exposed chrome . They didnt have 02 sensor bungs but with the PC I didnt need them .

I got my PC from fuelmoto Jamie got the tunes really really close and was right under 300

I got the big sucker from eastern and was 100 .

the pythons don't have caps, i think that's why they're cheaper.

i'm surprised that the paint would stick to chrome, pretty sweet if did though.
