I originally used the grip tape that came with them the first time but I changed bars this winter. I was running around the shop one day looking for some glue to install my left avon grip, wanted something that would be slick to let it slide on nice but something that would set up tacky and hold well... low and behold I tried some tire bead sealer. I wiped a small amount just inside the opening of the grip, not on the bar itself. It slid right on and ten minutes later I was riding, given I wasn't trying to tweak the grip till it had ample time to fully cure, but I was really impressed at how well it worked. Im also sure it would intentionally come loose easier than the factory supplied tape. In my experience with avons(I've puchased quiet a few sets) is they fit pretty tight so you will usually need something to ease installation, that might change depending on your specific bars, powder coating ect. just my 2c.
wasn't trying to thread jack, though it kinda looks that way
Glue is not required or recommended on the new grips. All new Harleys don't use the glue at all and all new grips are made to lock into the turn signal housing. The only way your grip would come off is if your entire turn signal housing comes off.
The Avons I got are clamped by the switch housing and don't need glue.
Did you change grips? All your pics look like kuryakyn ISO grips, even your description says kury's are on it. I just find your statement odd because I've bought three sets of Avons and none were clamped in.
I have the Kury Iso Grips and first tried hair spray as I have seen this recommended several times. Let it dry for 24 hours. The left grips moved around. Went back in cleaned off the hair spray residue. Bought 3M spray on glue...was told this would do the trick. Applied Glue inside the grip installed and let sit 24 hours. The lso Grip still moves....I am not impressed. So I am one of those who sez....OK what Glue will work?????
What came in the package with my Avons was the same thing people use to install golf club grips. It looks like wide double sided masking tape. You apply one edge then wrap the whole piece around. Then you apply the "activator" that turns the grip tape slippery. The grip slides right on. I don't remember specifically how long it said to let it set up. It is REALLY strong stuff!! Almost impossible to get a grip off after using it.
