Calm down there fellas, remember there are no stupid questions.

I just try not to downshift into 1st too early when coming to a stop, other than that the bike will let you know if it likes your gear selection by chug-a-lugging or purring away happily.

From what was taught in MSF class, and if you haven't taken it I highly recommend it, it will take a while to burn out the clutch. The clutch is a wet type and will wear better than one in a car. As in any standard shift vehicle, it is always best to match you rpms with the drive wheels as close as posible so you won't lose traction with your tires. After riding a while you will know when to shift even without looking at the speedo or tach. If you have you speed matched, you can release the clutch quickly, if not it is best to ease it out so as not to break your rear wheel loose. Again, takea MSF course or Riders Edge course and they will explain it all to you and you will be able to do it while under their supervision. It's a confidence builder and you will understand riding better.
