Default 2012 Dyna brake issue (Canada)

Not sure if this applies to any other than Canadian models, but I would like to share it just as an FYI.

A few weeks back I was riding my 2012 FXDF home from work and I noticed the red light in the console/speedo was on. It went on and off a couple of times intermittently while I was getting back home. Once I arrived, I discovered that my brake light was constantly illuminated and would not turn off. Checked everything obvious (levers sticking, screwed up blub, etc.), but couldn't figure it out. Consulted my manual and figured out that the light was an electrical system warning light, which, according to the service dept. at my dealer, was responsible for showing errors in the BCM, lighting and security systems. I don't have security and I made an appointment to have it looked at. After some diagnostic work, the dealer traced the issue back to the pressure switch up on the brake lever side housing. According to the service manager, older Harley's were known to snap these off, but this was the first occurrence of a redesigned unit causing problems, which, in my case, was seized into position, causing the light issue. Corrosion was likely caused by the fact that I ride in all types of very harsh weather. Living next to the Atlantic ocean probably didn't help any...

Anyway, they never had the part in stock, and it was over a week before I got my ride back. The part itself is only about $5, so, it may be worthwhile to keep one of these in your toolbox in case you encounter a similar issue.

Thanks,
Curtis

there are 2 parts in the front brake light switch area that can fail. # 1 is the end of the switch itself whch can be snapped off if a person isn't careful, or unaware of the switch when changing either the grip or removeing throttle cables, was more like 40$ when I had to do mine (don't ask) you have to take your housing apart to change the switch, so unless he glued yours back on the job was near 80$ approx. The other is the brake pump switch inside the front brake reservoir which can seize and cause the lever not to come far enough back to turn the light off. that piece has to cost 70 or 80$ and needs at least an hour to change. So i would like to see what only cost 5 $ to fix. Can you upload a pic of that piece please?
I don't want to seem skiptical, but since your under warranty might be your dealer told you "it was a cheap, easy fix" !

I will post a pic next time I get to the dealer, to order a spare. I didn't think about saving the part when I had the issue. But, according to the service manager, the part itself is a re-design (what year it began, I don't know). I will dig into this further over the weekend and get back to you.

Hey man thanks! Mine has the pump pressure switch to be done. When the brake oil is cold my brake light will tend to stay on. Well it's winter and time to do all the little fixes! Welcome to the forums !
