Default neck bearings have me frustrated.

Replacing the bearings in the neck and im at a stand still trying to remove the races. No I dont have any "fancy" tools, nor will I shell out 50 bucks on a one or two time thing. Anyone got a shade tree way to get these things out? Maybe im not doing it right.

I'm not sure about neck bearings specifically, but I've replaced a lot of bearings in general over the years. Typically if the shoulder that the race seats against is equal or smaller in diameter than the bearing race there will be a couple notches machined into the shoulder so you can get a drift to the back of the race and drive it out.

Without a race remover it is a tough process to drive them out. Get a long screwdriver and drive them. You might also get to know your local indy, years ago mine let me borrow the tool overnight.
You really do need the tool to prevent possibly damaging the surface though.

If you're talking about the race cups; I usually use a piece of PVC tube and a rubber mallet. It's soft so it doesn't hurt the neck or the edge of the bearing cups.

To re-install I use a threaded rod with round pieces of steel (larger than the bearing cups) and nuts. Just put it through the neck and tighten the nuts. It draws then straight and true.

If you're bound and determined to have a "real" bearing cup remover; have a look at Park Tools. They make bicycle tools and their stuff is pretty good.

I've never done neck bearings but I have replaced many bearings using a punch to drive the race out and brass drift to drive in. Good luck.

Quick question for those that have removed neck bearings, Thinking of having my trees powder coated. If bearings are removed in a decent manner can they be salvaged or is it a must to install new bearing each time they are removed?

Keep track of the upper and lower bearing so they go back into the same bearing races they came out of.

Also to the op, if you drive them out with a punch, work around the entire circumference of the race so it don't bind up, you don't want to scare up the neck with the race.

Buy the tools and do it right, then sell the tool or keep it for later use. Its not worth trashing your triple clamp or bearing doin it wrong.
