I have the 2007 Wide Glide with the 1584cc engine with only about 8500miles on her.
my starter sometimes grinds and does not start the bike properly ( takes a few tries and pushes of the button to line up and start )
I hope this is not damaging to the flywheel or anything ?
I figure I will have to replace the starter, HD dealer is NUTTS !! they want $600+ for the starter and 2 hours laboure.
So I figure if I can get the part of ebay at a fraction of the cost and do the labour myself ( has anyone done this replacment and have any advise on how to )
You will need a new starter clutch. I have the same problem with my 07 Low Rider and I will be replacing the factory one with an All ***** Starter Clutch sometime over the winter.

Thanks brother, Is the starter clutch a seperate peice or within the starter.. I would like more info if you can and if you have found a good deal please send me a link so that I also may purchase this product.
Im probably with bobnehok on this one but check into this before ordering parts...
Halfway down the page on this link is a service bulletin reguarding starter bolt torque on 06 and 07 models. Pic is kind of small so you may need to get real close to your 'puter screen.

Sorry I could'nt be of more help, but let us know what you find out.
Thank you for the info guys, It seems that all 06-07' wide glides had this issue ? wonder why they didnt factory recall them or repair them free of cost. did they use shitty starters the 1st couple years of the 1584cc and then figure they need to install something more heavy duty ?
My starter on my 07 Ultra was acting up for a long time and when I had to remove one of the starter bolts to install my new Vance & Hines True Duals I found that both starter bolts were loose. Mine was acting up because it did not have a good ground from not being tight to the engine. When it did work it sounded terrible from not being tight. After I tightened it up after the exhaust install it as worked fine ever since.

maybe there is hope then
I will try to diagnose the problem more accuratly and see if the starter is loose or the starter clutch is the problem.
I know this may be a dumb question nut I will ask anyways , does anyone know the exact location of the starter on my bike and what I need to remove to access the starter ? Iv heard you have to remove the primary cover if that makes any sense ?
Your starter is located under the battery on the right side of the bike. To remove it you will have to pull the battery and its box. Then remove the chrome starter cover, starter bolts, wiring and it will pull right out.
But before you remove the starter to inspect, I would check the torque on the bolts (25-27 ft-lbs) and do a series of starting tests to see if it acts up. If all is fine, pull one bolt back out at a time and throw a little blue loc tite on and torque back down.
I hope this is the end of your problems, but if you do in fact end up having to replace the starter clutch, I would suggest picking up the service manual. Has saved my *** many of times.
