OK, I got my FXDXT fairing in that I bought on ebay. They said it was a genuine new Harley part, but it didn't come in a Harley box, and it didn't have the little threaded brass inserts that go into the mounting points. What it looks like to me is that Harley farmed the part out to someone and then they put in the inserts and painted them at the factory and that someone still has the molds and is making this piece. Anyway the good thing is, it looks like I will be able to make a mold from this thing and be able to form them out of plastic. I'm not sure which plastic to use yet, and will have to do some experimenting and testing.
Sweet! I can't wait to see a prototype, please continue to update us. I found one near me that has never been mounted that I'm itching to pull the trigger on. But to get a nice improved one to fit on the new dynas would be the business! Just don't want to have to go through all the trial and error fitment to fit it onto a new dyna.
I've been away for a long while, and came back to find that you've made bags and are planning to make a nice fairing that will fit my '05 fxdxi! This is awesome!
Subscribed and plan to buy the bags as soon as I find quick some quick disconnect sideplates to remove my passenger back rest and luggage rack. If anybody sees some for sale, preferrably wrinkle black, please let me know.
HECK- I did the same with my bike only I used the regular sideplates and just removed the backrest and luggage rack. With the bags on and the backrest off, the side-plates aren't really that noticeable. I like having the option of running the backrest but being able to remove it. When the bags are off the studs dont stick out too far so its not bad. I'm thinking it would be a bit more noticeable with the bags off and the studs sticking far enough to allow the quick disconnect. Did that make sense? I had it all powder coated black so now they are a bit more hidden.
srosa, thanks. I actually have a very short sissy bar that I've bolted in place of the existing setup for solo riding, but unattaching the tail bag, unbolting the backrest/luggage rack setup, and bolting in the short bar (and doing the reverse when wifey wants to ride) is more work than I care to repeat on a regular basis.
Your bike looks great. I love those bags! I'm still debating on what to do with my headlight area. On my bike, I like the function but not the looks of the stock dinky headlight with my windshield. Topic for another thread!
Thats just the fairing. Its only one of twenty nine parts that make up the complete front fairing. What you see in that ebay auction can be had from New Castle HD for $178.60.
