Default Fuel issue or electrical issue?

I have a 09 FXD with around 38K on the clock. Over the last few weeks, I have been having some issues.

I started to notice that my light was severely dimming while riding.

Then, the bike wouldn't start at all, as if the battery was dead ( battery was replaced in Sept 2011). I was able to unhook the battery, and then rehook it up, and the bike started right up and went that way for a few days. Then it happened again.

Then, yesterday morning, the bike started surging, power would drop out and then start back up very briefly. It felt like a fuel system issue ( I replaced my fuel filter about six months ago).

Then, yesterday evening, as I was riding in traffic, and the bike died for a second, and then came back on. I pulled over and it was sputtering, and wouldn't turn back on. But I used my old trick, unhooking the battery, and hooking it back up, and it started right up, and was fine.

I took the battery into the shop today, and the battery had no issues. And the bike ran perfectly today.

Does anyone have any idea what could be happening, or have a tip on how I can try and track it down?

Try changing your relay. I had a faulty one.
I changed both. no more trouble.
Worked for me, cheap enough.
Carry a spare.

Sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere. Be sure all battery, started, grounds, etc..are good..... I would even take them all off, clean them and reconnect good and tight to be sure. You will be surprised what a poor connection will do to whack out an electrical system...

Greetings Brenth
Your 09 should have the ability to check your odometer DTC for trouble codes but 1st you stated that your head lights indicated a problem, I would start with checking the wiring for a loose connection there, then clear your fault codes.

Check you ground cable where it connects to the frame. Also make sure all ground wires are clean and tight.

It sounds like the negative cable from your battery to the frame ....not the connection but the cable its self.

So I checked the diag codes, and I had three.

PO526 - Battery Voltage Low
b1006 - Accessory Line Overvoltage Instruments
b1007 - Accessory Line Overvoltage Instruments

I cleared them all, and they haven't yet come back. I checked all cables, and cleaned all the connections, and then cleaned all the relay and fuse leads. Haven't put any miles on it yet, I will in the next day or so, and see what happens. If it happens more, I will replace the relays and the negative cable as suggested. Thanks for the help everyone!

This is my guess too. You may want to have a spare handy.
