Default Best years to buy?

I have been riding a 08 triumph speedmaster for the last 4 years and love the ride of the bike? Because it has duel disks up front and a little bit more ground clearance then most bikes. I have been looking at FXDX's but the prices seem a little high for some and that they stop making them in 05. I find lots of Street bob's for about the same prices as some FXDX's. Other then motor size and model differences what other changes happened since 1999 that might sway me more in one direction or the other. Thanks chuck

In 06 they put a 6 speed tranny and fuel injection on the dyna and are 88ci, in 07 they are all 6 speed and a bigger motor 96ci, 99-01 the rear tire was a 130 in 02 tire went up in size to a 150 except for the fxdx had a 150 from 01, the cam tensioners were upgraded to hydraulic in 07,

So a 06 could be a great year to grab, bigger tire and a six speed but still a 88ci. I am kinda leaning towards a 88ci because I have heard so much about them being turned in to a 95ci being better then a 96ci anyway.

The 06 has some issues with the inner primary bearing and stator. If you want a Street Bob, I'd get an 07 or newer.

Any FXDX after 99 is good, 99 did not have the adjustable front forks or sealed wheel bearings.

And to correct the previous poster, the FXDX did have a 150 rear tire in 2000, but the FXDXT did not.

Fuel injection was optionally available the last two years of the FXDX, in 2004 and 2005 (FXDXI) and it works well.

There is no way I would buy an '06 Dyna. That was Harley's guinea pig bike to test the 6 speed trannys and the "improved" cam chain tensioners. The inner primary bearing failures were so bad that the Moco told Dealers to replace the bearings every 15,000 miles as a precaution. ( They eventually stopped that policy.)

The strongest motors were 99-02. They featured hot forged cranks and the super ( IMO ) important Timken Lefty bearing in the crankcase. In 03 the Moco pulled that bearing out to save $$$ though.

In 07 the motors got bigger due to an increase in stroke while producing cast crankshafts vs the cold and previously hot forged cranks.

A clean 03 to 06 wouldn't scare me away but I'd look for the earlier models. (I ride a lot of miles.) And as for 07 and later? I've taken them apart. No Thanks.

Well, I ride a fat bob fxdf. Its got dual front discs, great handling and can be had with either the 96 or the awesome 103 starting in2012 as standard.

They started making them in 2008 and I have to imagine that they can be had for a reasonable amount now. I rode an 07 fatboy and had zero mechanical issues with the tc 96b engine. It was a balanced version though but a twin cam 96 none the less.

My current fxdf fat bob is a 103 powered machine and I honestly wouldn't want any other ride. Handling, braking, and goooooinnngggg are wickedly fun! Fatbob sounds like what your looking for.

I like the older ones. I can work on them and if it breaks down I can get it home. the new ones you just call a wrecker.

Thanks thats the type of stuff I was looking for.

Fat bobs are great but the prices are way to high for me I really dont want to go over $10,000

If I had to do it again I'd definitely get a 00-02 FXDX or FXDX-T. The new cranks are nowhere near as good as those years. I have an 09 fat bob that I love but I know I'm going to need to do crank work eventually which is very expensive to get to.
