Fuel mileage sucks!
Yeah, you'll lose "performance" that you use probably <5% of the time. Costing you reduction in range 100% of the time.
I know, stock sucks. Sometimes it works better than "modded." Sometimes not.
Just depends on how important extended range is to you.
I modded an EVO and the best I could get was 34mpg. Sold the bike after getting tired of running outa gas at the 135 mile mark when other riders still had 1/3rd of a tank, when I was walking. (Wish Dyna's had 10 gallon tanks!)
Bought a new bike and left it stock. I often go on 400 mile rides around here, with gas availability spotty.
What do you think these big cams do? They find ways of getting more fuel mixture into the cylinder. Ditto for bigger bores and ported heads. It's all about cramming more fuel into the combustion chamber and that means using more gas

Having said that, I've been pleasantly surprised at my soft-mod 103 with 204 cams, milled heads, V&H exhaust and FP3. On the interstate, long distance, running a constant 90 in 6th gear, I consistently get 45 MPG. That's amazingly good to my thinking.
When I slow down and run in 5th, my mileage actually decreases.
