id like to say i get good gas mileage. Trips up to sacramento from the bay area while cruising 80 the whole way i typically burn about 4 gallons. never actually done the math. but its good enough for me. ive done Ness stage 1 AC w/ K&N filter, Thunderheader, and runnin a fuelpak.
I get around 40-43 mpg. Mine is stock except for a SE air filter and H-D's SE download. More would be better, but I'm ok with it. Getting 55-61mpg with my KTM Duke 690, but it's a totally different animal and I ride the heck out of it most of the time. Not bad for a 65HP 653cc single... dd50
I get 42-48 on the hiway and high 30's around town on my FXDB runnin V&H strait shot slipons, high flow air filter and PCV+AT. Gonna go down here shortly when I add my cams though.
After reading all of these posts, I don't feel that bad. I thought I was getting crappy gas mileage at about 40ish per gallon until now. I am running a Cobra Fi2000 PowrPro Tuner with Samson "Pomonas". Most of my riding consists of stop and go around town with the weekend romp to the Casino or Mountains (both within 45 miles). Sure like the way "Ethel" runs and wouldn't change just for a little more mileage.
Life sucked when the bike was running the big radius....gas mileage improved big Time after the hacker warheader 2into1 went on....but the big thing for me is how I drive it. Seriously if I ride it like a girl it does really well but if I'm out stomping the **** out of it it drops dramatically. I guess my point is what you get is effected by not just your set up but how you drive it. I'm really happy with my tune tho, I gotta say valley racing was nuts on when they dialed it all in. I would say that to be very honest with the op's set up he's pretty lucky getting those oddly lengthed opposing pipes to do much more than make noise verses establish any real significant gains in tq or hp....but what little zip he got was definitely traded off in terms of gas mileage. You really have to be willing to sacrifice one for the other. Harley+performance = poor fuel economy. No different than any hot rod car really it's basic math.
I'd go to a two into one and get an aftermarket tuner and it would probably go up.
I know there are many threads with bad fuel mileage subjects but thought I'd try again. I have an '09 with a SERT, SE air cleaner and V&H Shortshots and from day ONE, I have averaged no better than 35mpg. However, that is almost all around town. I have been out on the interstate and taken some long trips but never gotten more than 45 mpg. I've had it on the dyno THREE times, once after break-in, once at the 10K service and again about six months ago and still the same. It runs like a scalded dog so I've learned to live with it. It's just that it's sort of a bummer when other Dyna folks I speak to tell me they get almost 50 mpg! I'm looking for gas almost always between the 120-130 mile mark. That's just retarded! I have read many posts claiming the Shortshots are the culprit but that sure seems like a huge loss in MPG to attribute to the exhaust. Any one have an opinion. Thanks in advance.
I've never gotten over 40 on the Fat Bob. Talking gas mileage is like talking about the size of your last catch.....
Well yea but that's if I'm feathering the throttle and riding like a puss......
Lol, mileage decreases rapidly when you twist the loud handle frequently.
The good mileage numbers I posted are mostly cruising numbers also...goes down when I ride it hard.
I'm sure when I get my bike back from getting my Wood cams, D&D Fat Cat & dyno tuned again I will never get good mileage from this point on because I won't be able to resist opening it up constantly.
I have the Vance & Hines Big Radius 2-Into-2 exhaust, the Kuryakin High Five Mach II air cleaner, and the Screaming Eagle Race Tuner, and consistently get 50 MPG almost no matter where I ride.....
Perhaps if you are concerned about this, you should talk to your dyno tuner guy, and tell him you are looking for more MPG. It should be a simple mapping issue...... Although your bike may not go like a bat out of hell as much.....
