I just joined up here on the Forum. It's 2:10am in Missouri at the freezing like all get out at the Lake of the Ozarks. I have one of those yellow Harbor Freight Motorcycle/ATV jacks myself. I've used it a couple of times on my '06 Super Glide Custom and I have noticed that it is a pain to keep everything level. I've been able to get the bike up off the ground without any other help. I have to go in on the right side and set it up against the kick stand. I just leave the kick stand down the whole time. That way it's down when the bike goes back down. I have to hold onto the handle bars and steady out the bike as I jack it up and it seems to be a good steady platform after I get the bike up off the ground. I don't much like having it up there in the air though. No way to really strap anything. There are some loops on the jack but they don't really look very functional to me for tying down the bike to steady it up. Eventually I'm just going to get one of those $700 platform jacks like the bike shops have. After I win the lottery.

What's the story on the adapter blocks for this Harbor Freight type jack? I have been able to get the bike up without using anything like that. I make sure not to flex or pinchthe tranny/shift cable between the jack/bike. Is there anything else to watch for? Do I really need blocks and if so what kind? What's the story on the J&S jacks, where can they be bought? Thanks for any input.
The tranny pan sticks down below the frame and you might be picking your bike up by the tranny pan instead of the frame. You need some kind of 1" adapter blocks to put on the frame in three places due to the 1" metal strip welded to the frame on the back right side. This levels everything out. The blocks from Harley are only about $25 I think and they snap on to the frame. This would be easier but I had some spare oak and time so I made my own.

I find hockey pucks work fine and are a lot cheaper than "harley adapters".

I appreciate all the info. Very helpful. I think I'm going to get one of those J&S jacks. But I will get one of the space options going for now. I've only picked up the bike 2 or 3 times so far. When it did get fully supported by the jack supports it sat pretty steady and very level. I didn't mess up anything like that tranny pan doing that did I???

I use the Harbor Freight yellow jack on my fatboy, and haven't had a problem getting the bike in the air. All by myself each time. I usually put the jack under the right side, and hold the handlebars and front brake until the bike is in the air. I always leave the kickstand down so that I don't have to think about putting it back down before lowering the lift. I have never needed any help with it. Works great for me. I couldn't imagine having to sit on the bike to get it under the bike. I prop the bike up with the handlebars from the right side while holding the front brake and then jack it up if I need extra clearance, but I usually don't even need that clearance as when the bike is let down it lowers the jack really low...

That sounds just like my experience with the Harbor Freight lift. I just roll it under the right side, grab hold of the handle bar and hold the bike balanced and off the kick stand and just start lifting it up. It does want to lean to the right at first but once the weight transfers to the lift it will stabilize pretty quick. Just hope I haven't messed up that tranny pan not using any spacers. Oh well, almost anything will work for that so I'll figure out something about that problem.
