First problem I ever really had with my bike....It's a 2006 Super Glide and I haven't been able to ride much in awhile. So the last couple of times I have had the opportunity to ride I have had a couple of issues. I went to start it up the other day and when I switched the switch to "run" the fuel pump didn't run and of course it wouldn't start. After switching it on and off several times the fuel pump ran and the bike started and ran fine. I rode a few times after that and it did fine. Last weekend I got on, and same thing. I got it started, rode it to the store to get gas, started it back up and was running shifting through the gears going back home and it cut out and died. Tried to start it back up and the fuel pump wouldn't run. Even after multiple on/off cycles of the switch. Finally I leaned it over on the sidestand and tried it and it started. Ran fine all the way back home. Anyone ever had this problem? It obviously intermittent but I am afraid to ride very far for fear that it will die and not start back up. Not sure if I have an issue with the "run" switch or an intermittent fuel pump. I hate intermittent problems....so hard to troubleshoot.
Check the fuel pump relay, it could have some corrosion on the contacts, but it's cheap to replace so try a new one. Also look at your connections at the battery and ground.
+1 on the fuel pump relay I had the same thing with my 06 wg about a month after I bought it. I'm guessing previous owned used high pressure hose or something to clean it alot. The relay also isn't a specific harley item go too your local auto parts store with the relay they are about $4 and common in cars.
I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Check your fuses. Mine had some corrosion on them. I pulled the fuses, cleaned connections with electrical cleaner spray and replaced all the fuses....Good to go... Good luck.
Well, I checked the relay and fuse. Thought I had it but I didn't. I knew better but I went out for a ride and it died about 15 miles from the house. Luckily a guy stopped who had a truck and a mc trailer and brought it to the house for me. The fuel pump won't run at all now which I guess is good...made it easier to troubleshoot. I could hear the system relay click when I switched it to run. I checked voltage at the fuel pump connector under the console and had the right voltage...bad fuel pump. Guess I'll be making a trip to the dealership this weekend to lay down $250. Gotta pay to ride I guess.
