That's a fundamental problem we've all experienced at some point. If it feels like it's cross threading, it probably is. Back off and change your approach.
They are 5/16 but fine thread - All the same size on an 04 Dyna. I used Brass Nuts and anti-seize so they would not rust / weld to the studs. I plan to use the HD Chrome Mirror Acorn nuts which should work - to cover the brass. Unfortunately, "Threads for the South" - The "Toys R Us" of Stainless Steel and specialty fasteners here in Atl don't have 5/16 fine thread SS acorn nuts... Good luck - db
I had the same problem with my 06 fxdbi when i switched to V&H pipes, the rear cylinder was the issue as well, except i really screwed up and cross threaded one. I ended up having to replace the stud. No problems now and a good leason learned.
I wish I could show you guys my nuts (hehe), but my digital camera doesn't have the resolution required to do close ups. I believe I have two different kinds of nuts. One of the nuts goes on just fine - on any of the 4 exhaust studs. Easy on, easy off. The other two nuts will only go on one or two threads before it gets real tight, no matter which exhaust stud I put it on.
On closer examination, these two nuts are stamped differently than the other two. These are the nuts I pulled off and as far as I know, this is how it came from the factory. I can't figure it out - maybe mine was built on a Friday or a Monday. Anyway - I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to get new nuts. I tried Lowes, Home Depot, AutoZone, etc - can't find them anywhere. They're 5/16 24TPI and they have a shoulder.
Hopefully you chased the threads and then used an antisieze compound. For exhaust bolts a liitle plain milk-of-magnesium works great. As an old air force mechanic, we always used M-O-M for the hot (exhaust) section of an engine. Regular molendyum would gum up. JMO(just my opion)
you need a pivoting head on your nuts!!! lol pow. But really you do. I had this issue untill i used an extended wrench that had a pivot on the business end. went on geat after that. It's got to do with the angle of approach and the fins on the motor make it difficult to get it right.
Iâve always had problems with HD bolts & nuts. I have seen a lot of galvanic corrosion (white powder residue) between the threads and a lot of galling (tearing and welding) of the threads leading to the shearing of the bolts. Even when using penetrating oils I have broken fairly new bolts while loosening. I donât recommend it for all applications but for myself I usually put some anti-seize on any threads that Iâm assembling to make it easier the next time. BB
