Trotter,

Is your skull cap DOT approved? Nebraska also has a helmet law (I'm on the other side of the Missouri River) and they do not allow non-DOT helmets. They issued quite a few tickets in Omaha last year...

PS - don't forget to letthe setter in. Doesn't look very happy w/ the weather :-)

I saw the DOT just as I hit send! I have a DOT Skid Lid; much lighter than my old Fulmer. Gonna need to look into your brand. I hear you on the dog issue, Tucker, the spoiled rotten English Pointer runs my place, along withhis dipsh!t gang - my wife's 3 Border Collies.

Well,... A full face helmet is the safest, and visibility isnt a problem with a good fitting high quality full face helmet, like my Shoei RF-1000. I always wear some type of DOT helmet. Usually my full face Shoei RF-1000 when its cold and when I might get caught out in the rain. I also have an AFX FX7 half helmet, its an ok helmet justpretty bulky, but what do ya expect for a helmet that costs under $30. My current favorite all around helmet is my Harley beanie. Its lightweight and is pretty small, and is great in the spring, summer and fall.
I guess you have to make your own choice of whats the safest for you. I will not ride without something DOT approved on my head, but I don't preach at or look down on those who choose to not wear a helmet. Matter of fact,... most all of the guys in my club dont wear a helmet. Its just a matter of what each persons own comfort level is.

As a newbie, I wear a full face helmet because itgives memore protection. But it restricts my vision and makes me veryuncomfortable. So I am considering to change it to a half helmet but I am aware of its protection. There is no side and chin protection. Ishalfhelmetreally daugerous for beginners?
I know what you mean by restricting vision and being uncomfortable.

I started riding vintage British m/c's and rode wearing a Davida Classic 'pidding basin' style helmet......not legal here in the UK but I don't know of any rider od an old classic bike that's got a tciket for wearing one on a vintage bike.

When I sold the BSA and bought the brand new Ducati Monster I got all the modern riding gear, of full face Arai, armoured leathers blah blah etc.

When I had my first test rides on the Harley's I had to use that gear and I found it was almost impossible to ride the Dyna with a full face helmet on as the wide and high arm riding style on the bars with a feet forward postion meant it was impossible to do 'shoulder checks' with the full face on as the chin projection hit my shoulder way before I could see anything behind.
You really don't want to be riding in the UK like that.

So, as the full face was 6 years old anyway and at the end of it's design life it needed replacing, so I've replaced it with an open face. The lack of chin protection is offset by the fact that my vison behind is now greater.

I have both full face and 1/2, but I prefer the full face. The full face is an HJC CJ12
