Default Compression release question

I had a big bore, cam and head work done on my 2000 fxdx. They put a compression release in and I heard to only use it when it's hot out or it could cause damage. What do you guys know about the subject?

That's what I thought. I figured it wouldn't hurt if I pushed it in every time, but wasn't sure. What do the guys that have em do? Do they use it every time they start their bike?

Someone has been filling your head with BS.....use them especially on cold starts. Sometimes you don't need to use them if you have just stopped for gas or a slash but every time would be the best option.

This is interesting, since you mentioned head work.
I've been building Harley race engines since the 70's and have an idea what those guys were thinking, but if that is the case they were questioning their own work. . .
When you mill heads for racing the moment of horror is when you start the engine each time. Your domed piston is closer than it will ever be.

Use 'em every time you start; that way it becomes a habit and you won't be going "aw sh*t!" when you hear a hot kickback...if they're the HD releases; listen if they close too quick...there's a bit of a design flaw that lets them do that sometimes.

Only time I do not them is when I forget to. I was told by my builder to use them. I am also going to install an oil cooler. My engine seems to run hotter since the upgrade to the 107.

you always want to use them when starting your engine, it is easier on your starter, if you don't use the compression release button, you will burn up your starter real quick
