busted led turn signal mirror
while replacing the brake pads on the front of my SB i managed to get brake fluid inside on of my HD LED Turn Signal Mirrors - it was mounted under the bars, the fluid leaked out of the master cylinder and down into the mirror.
i only noticed once i turned the bike on and seen one of the leds out... that and the drips coming out of the bottom of the mirror
anyway, i took the mirror off and with a little heat managed to pry the glass out, but unfortunately stripped a screw on the inside. i'lll drill it out tomorrow
i'm not certain what damage has been done by the fluid, and likely more by my tearing into the light but if I can fix it, i'll post up pics...
...if not and i need to replace them, i'll be asking for pics (can't justify dropping $300 on a silly mistake, might just have to be regular ol' mirrors this time)
once it's dried out should it be good to bolt it back on you figure?
The brake fluid might have turned the silicone seal into goo, but I guess you would see that right away. Otherwise, it probable dissolved the wiring insulation inside the stem and behind the mirror.
You could pull the seal out of the groove that runs the length of the stem. It should pop right back in, but if not, you could replace it with black RTV. I don't think it would have damaged the LED's. worst case, they might have gotten cloudy from the brake fluid etch.
Honestly, I put Hesse things on to replace stock turn signals, but in hindsight, I wouldn't do it again. They just aren't very bright and almost invisible in bright sunlight. They are so dim in daylight that I added the Joker Machine fork mounted LED's just so people can see my turn signals. If I ever need to replace the LED mirrors, I'll go with some under mounted bar-end mirrors.
considering replacing them with the heartlands ones but that'll involve pulling the internal wiring and don't fancy that hassle... regular mirrors it might just be!
