Well, last wknd I got pulled over on my bike for it being too loud. I have an 03 lowrider with a thunderheader. While I like the sound, it is probably a little too loud. Is there anything a guy can do to tame it a little?
Thanks,
That's how I feel too. I don't think they're loud unless you're gunning it or or downshifting at higher RPM's.
Are there loud pipe laws in CA? Everyone runs T-Headers and I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket. I don't know how the cop would even approach that. "Uh yeah you rode by in a group of bikes and I specifically picked out your bike as the loud one. Would you turn it back on so I can hear and measure with my decibel meter?"
What obligation do you have to cooperate? "No, I don't want to turn my bike on for you", or even if you do, I don't think it's that loud at idle.
To me that's like saying "Hey your saddlebags look kind of full, can I look in them?".....no.
yes a new law came in effect this year that arnold signed before he left office years ago
ANY BIKE made after jan 1 2013 must have a sticker /label stating it meets the sound/emission requirements you are not suppose to change exhaust on them
vance and hines got fined HEAVILY , some ebay stores wont even ship exhaust to cali anymore (ive only dealt with one, and i was trying to get a v&h pipe, im guessing v&h told all distributors not to sell to cali)
my bike was made after jan 1 2013.....and as you can see in my sig i run a TH , i just dont ride full throttle all the time
ALSO THEY HAVE TO PULL YOU OVER FOR SOMETHING ELSE FIRST they cant just pull you over for EXHAUST , so you have to be speeding/not using signals/etc etc
note: when i had a sportbike years ago i was popped for loud exhaust, i mainly think this will effect sportbike riders more cops usually understand the harley lifestyle and know that a majority of harley riders arent popping wheelies or trying to go 140mph

I have the quiet baffles from V&H when I ordered my V&H Big Shots. Not sure if they will fit in your Thunderheader. I never installed them as my bike is not loud enough for me LOL. But some folks said they were loud so they got quiet baffles. So I have mine on hand...if you want them let me know. According to V&H they are supposed to reduce decibel by 3% or so.
I was riding pretty aggressive for 11:00 at night however I was pretty surprised when he told me why I was being pulled over. I have heard of people bending the end of the cone metal piece out towards the baffle. Does this affect performance? Does this do anything for sound? Does the fact that the bike has SE heads, 510 cams and 95" kit make a difference?
