Anybody have a recommendation for a stronger starter?
With my cams and big bore, I will most likely upgrade when the time comes...my Bob is a 2006 so we will see how it does with the extra strain. No compression releases...
I wound remove and clean the ground to frame. Lots of people will check where the cable connects to the battery, but will not check the other end of the cables.
The ground getting dirty or corroded is fairly common, cause the problem you are having.
That was my thought also. The mount for that ground gets a lot of heat, vibration and dirt. I'd hate to see you buy a new starter and find out it was something this simple. May not be, but it's worth a look.
The ground cable from the battery to the frame. It is not a matter of being tight, remove and clean the connector and the frame point where it bolts too. They get corroded and stop making a connection.

Do a volt drop from the starter case to the battery ground side. Then do the same from the hot lead on the starter to the pos side of battery. You are looking for a poor connection that will cause the wires to heat up and not get full electrical power to the starter itself. As already stated, if the solenoid is engaging, that is not the problem. Also, go to walmart and pick up an Atwood solid state battery charger in the marine section. They work great and will bring your battery up to top charge in about an hour and costs about $29.00. My bike has 114k on it and the starter is still just fine. Not to say it can't be the starter but I'd check everything first so as not to spend money needlessly.

I tried twin-power starter, would not recommend those, they don't last. Rumor has it they are now called all-***** but I don't know for sure. I now have a drag specialties starter and it works great, can't comment on the durability, installed it last september.
FWIW, the stock starter in my 07 FXDL was always weak, struggled to turn the motor over, even with all new cables, connections and a brand new fully charged battery.
now that I think about it, the bike turned over fine a few times this morning when I first came out but wouldnt fire right up which was unusual. then I started having a tougher time turning it over after
