I'm sure this is covered but I tried searching and looking through the important threads list and couldn't find it.
So I have a lead on a 2009 super glide custom with 17k miles on it. If I go over to look and take it for a spin are there any known issues I should be looking for?
Any other random things to check would be nice as well.
I haven't heard of any issues specific to the '09s. Just check it out like you would any other vehicle: make sure it's been maintained properly, try to determine how much life is in the normal wear items such as tires, battery, etc, and if any mods been done correctly or in a half-*** manner.
I have an '09 super glide custom, 12,000 miles. Have had absolutely no issues with the bike. As stated above, make sure any mods are done correctly and do not pay extra for any of the add ons. I would look up the value on Kelley Blue Book and pay no more than what they say. Also, if you do not know what to look for or questions to ask, take someone with you who does.
As stated above, check tires, battery, and overall care of the bike. If it looks well maintained, hopefully it was. You could check the oil as well. Depending on who's selling, you may not get the chance to ride it, if so have him ride it down the block or somethin...
But for the most part any bike after 06 is gonna be pretty soild.
Pay $15-20 online and run a VIN check before you seriously consider buying any bike from a third party. Any time the title changes hands it will have an updated mileage that you can compare with the current mileage, and will also show whether the bike was ever totalled/rebuilt. You can find out if it was stolen or salvage titled for free online, but it is worth the small amount of money up front to avoid a potential false OD reading. I almost put money down on a bike that had previously been a salvage title that turned into a rebuild and then through the process of changing state titles came out with a clean title altogether. A VIN check will avoid that and provide you with a good history.
Give it the ol' "once over" ask for records.. maintenance, replacement parts/items, etc.. esp. depending on the mods... I dont know of any issues that were or are endemic to any of the 09s'
(09 was the last year of the FXDL.. unfortunately for me.. so I went with an '12 FXDC instead.. good bike just the same..)
Take it for a spin and listen and feel for unusual stuff.. make sure everything works as its supposed to.. all basic vehicle buying steps..
It doesn't say where you are from but if you are anywhere near where Sandy hit buy a new bike. Not that I am not a trusting soul, but..... That is why I went new after my Road King went under water. The Super Glide is such a great deal and nothing like a new machine.
One man's opinion.
Hey thanks for all the input guys. I'm in MN so no worries of hurricane damage. Hopefully the guy didn't like to take it out in the winter either haha.
It is reassuring to hear there aren't any crazy fluke issues with the model and year i would have to worry about as well.
I'll see when I can take it for a spin and try and get the maint records. From the pictures the bike looks pretty much stock except it has a solo seat and a windshield on it.
