Default Primary Tower Gasket?

I have searched but I had a leak where the mid controls used to be and I read that I can RTV it. My question is what if it leaks on the back side can I rTV that as well? I have a trip coming up and don't have time (or experience) to pull the primary cover at the moment. Any advise?

Mud put together a great thread on some primary work he did.. and mentioned the tower gasket and its reinstallation requirements/location.

I had an 06 LR like you but I never had to service the tower gasket.. I suppose thats possible (using RTV as a temporary fix) but it depends on what class of leak (U.S. Army values) you are talking about ..

For instance:

What is a class 1 leak?

Seepage of fluid not great enough to form drops

What is a class 2 leak?

Seepage of fluid great enough to form drops, but not great enough to cause the drops to fall during inspection

What is a class 3 leak?

Seepage of fluid great enough to form drops and drip during inspection

So depending on how bad it is.. thats where I'd start..

Good luck

Going back to the Army it would be a class 3 and would dead line the vehicle.

IMHO.. I wouldnt chance it then bro..

BUT,... I guess, depending on the length and duration of your trip you could lug along a ratchet, extension, bit and a jug of oil to keep the level up.. inspecting it at every gas stop... and every morning prior to departure..

but as I stated previously.. I wouldnt..

pull the outer primary cover (very simple) go to napa, get 2 9 1/16ths freeze plugs... tap one into the inside part of the tower on the primary cover, and the other into the inner primary tower hole..on the inner primary side it will go in loosley untill it gets further back... use an 3/8ths extension or something to seat it.... wont ever leak again..did mine this way 5 years ago

Last dumb question I guess... Couldn't I just take the chrome cap off the front and just fill the entire cavity with RTV? Wouldn't have to take the cover off just a thought.

I had the same problem.....I pulled the outside plug and put a good bead of RTV around it and the leak stopped only to reappear on the back side. I then took it to my mechanic and he replaced the tower gasket.

Easy fix, the gasket even has some adhesive to keep it in place when you go to bolt it up.

Thanks for the responses I guess I'll do it the correct way I was just thinking it would have to be replaced again and the RTV might be a more permanent solution. Oh well.
