RE: question for the guys with chrome outter primarys
ORIGINAL: jmbear328
A guy I know who works at one of the dealers in my area suggested that I come by with my outter primary and the chrome button plug and that he has a shaft punch that should fit snugly inside of that shifter shaft hole and that he will heat it up just a bit and tap it from the inside to bring that sleeve outward some so the cap will fit.

RE: question for the guys with chrome outter primarys
What am Imissing here, seems pretty simple.
That bushing is about a half inch long.
Cut one in half, drive it in,
pop in the cover.
Or, drive the one that is in there now back out.
The outer primary cover is off now right??
What am I misunderstanding??
Picture of the problem area??

I recently installed forward controls and a new H-D chrome inner and outter primary on my 06 Superglide, and I did everything as the instructions and the shop manuel suggested, but I after finishing up I decided to snap on the chrome plug that goes in the hole left by removing the old mid control shifter shaft, but the plug wouldnt fit. So after comparing the old factory outter primary cover with the new chrome outter primary cover it was obvious that the chrome plug wouldnt fit into the hole on the chrome cover because there is a metal sleeve in both of the primaries but it is recessed appx 1/4in in the chrome cover and its flush with the outside on the and thus it prevents the chome plug from seating and holding on in the chrome cover. I along with a local indy shop owner figured that it was just a Harley defect and that they seated the sleeve accidently too deep in the chrome cover. Well,... I called up zanottis and they were very helpful and just informed me that they would order me another outter and to just put mine back in the mail and ship it back to them. Well,... John at zanottis said that he got my new outter from H-D today and decided to open it up to look at it and he stated that the new one is identical to the old one that I just sent back. He stated that he is gonna order some chrome plugs from Harley and see if that will help otherwise he has no idea what to do because the chrome plug will not fit into it either. So my question is to anyne on here is this: Im looking for anyone on here that has changed to the chrome Harley outter primary, and installed the factory H-D forward controls, because I am looking for a way to plug that hole because the plug in the forward control kit wont fit because of the recessed sleeve. I tried moving that sleeve and its pressed in and wont budge, so I'm now at a brick wall.
RE: question for the guys with chrome outter primarys
Well,... first of all swapping out both primarys is gonna be outta the question. And zanottis wont swap out the outter primary either since I ordered the correct part and they sent the correct part and Harley is not admitting a problem. I'm still going to appeal to Harley in the end and see if I can rectify this problem. In the end I have a few ideas of making something work if all else fails, but just be warned if you switch to forwards and the outter primary, you will have a hole there until Harley fixes the problem.
WS6 Formula,
What size bolt did you use?
mudpuddle,
Well the chrome outter primary is somewhere between zanottis and here, and I have my factory silver one on right now. Well I agree the simple fix would be to go in from the inside of the outter primary, when its off, and tap it forward. But so farI havent been able to make it budge because it pressed in pretty tight. I also thought of tapping the one out of my inner primary in an experiment to see if I could cut it in half and fill that remaining spot near the end so the cap would fit. So,... right now, I plan on going over to one of my local dealers when my primary returns and they said they will heat up the inside shaft area and try and tap that sleeve outwards which would fix the problem. Well thankfully,...I'm leaving this weekend on a 7 day cruise and hopefully that will get my mind off of all this silly crap.
RE: question for the guys with chrome outter primarys
Well,... I just decided to say and to heck with it. I'm contacting Zanottis in the morning and am gonna ask if they will just send me a new chrome outter and inner primary from an 06 wideglide and i'll return the primaries that I have. Its not like I paid anything on labor to install the inner primary since I did the work myself. So I'll just take it all back apart again if Zanottis will allow me to return mine.
If they dont allow me to swap out then I'll have to cross that bridge when it comes.
