Default question for the guys with chrome outter primarys

I recently installed forward controls and a new H-D chrome inner and outter primary on my 06 Superglide, and I did everything as the instructions and the shop manuel suggested, but I after finishing up I decided to snap on the chrome plug that goes in the hole left by removing the old mid control shifter shaft, but the plug wouldnt fit. So after comparing the old factory outter primary cover with the new chrome outter primary cover it was obvious that the chrome plug wouldnt fit into the hole on the chrome cover because there is a metal sleeve in both of the primaries but it is recessed appx 1/4in in the chrome cover and its flush with the outside on the and thus it prevents the chome plug from seating and holding on in the chrome cover. I along with a local indy shop owner figured that it was just a Harley defect and that they seated the sleeve accidently too deep in the chrome cover. Well,... I called up zanottis and they were very helpful and just informed me that they would order me another outter and to just put mine back in the mail and ship it back to them. Well,... John at zanottis said that he got my new outter from H-D today and decided to open it up to look at it and he stated that the new one is identical to the old one that I just sent back. He stated that he is gonna order some chrome plugs from Harley and see if that will help otherwise he has no idea what to do because the chrome plug will not fit into it either. So my question is to anyne on here is this: Im looking for anyone on here that has changed to the chrome Harley outter primary, and installed the factory H-D forward controls, because I am looking for a way to plug that hole because the plug in the forward control kit wont fit because of the recessed sleeve. I tried moving that sleeve and its pressed in and wont budge, so I'm now at a brick wall.

Why dont you just get a wide glide outer primary cover, and use a 14mm freeze plug on the inner primary hole to seal it. that way it will be alot cleaner looking with out the button sticking out. you should have gotten the wide glide inner also but this is a easy fix for what ya have. Mine has worked out fine and looks abit cleaner.

Well,... I realize that if I had bought the inner and outter primary for an 06 wideglide that I wouldnt be having this problem now. But,... unfortunately I already have both, and you wouldnt think this would be a problem since ALL of the parts are for an06 Dyna.So,... I've gotta try and figure out how to make what I have work. I spoke with 3 different dealers and they all said they havent had an oppertunity to have to put on a chrome outter primary AND forward controls on an 06 Superglide yet. I have checked with many dealers and they all say that this is news to them and dont have a clue of what I can do. A guy I know who works at one of the dealers in my area suggested that I come by with my outter primary and the chrome button plug and that he has a shaft punch that should fit snugly inside of that shifter shaft hole and that he will heat it up just a bit and tap it from the inside to bring that sleeve outward some so the cap will fit. The service manager at another dealership in my area stated that they have never encountered this problem either, but stated that he was gonna call Harley up and give me a call back today and let me know what they said.

Well,...... I am assuming that I am the rare one who put on a H-D Chrome outter primary after installing a set of H-D Forward controls.

I did put a chrome wideglide outer primary. Well, inner too. What does Zanotti's say about swapping the outer out for a wideglide part? These come STOCK on the wideglides...

well the inner primary is on my bike and I really dont wanna have to remove it even if zanottis would swap it out. and they are sending me my old one back since there is not a"FIX" for my problem,....even though thecap is supposed to fit according to Harley. Harley dont know what to do,.... so i'm stuck out with a hole in the outter primary which dont affect anything but the looks.

I would do what Trotter recommended above. But if you don't wantto swap out the cover with a Wide Glide cover, I used one of these to fill the hole: http://www.mmsacc-stainless.com/html/carriage_bolts.htm

Hey Jim. Just run a long bolt through the hole where the shifter rod was and snug up a locknut with the nylon bushing on it on the backside. The you can just pop a chrome cap on the head of the bolt. Better than looking at that damned hole at any rate.

I dont see why Zanotties wont exchange it for a Wide Glide outter cover there the same price.. the freeze plugs 1.00. and about 5 min to tap it in to place. and It'll lookcleaner..
