Default MSRP and Freight

I'm purchasing my first Harley (Street Bob)this weekend...I cannot wait! Requesting response from those that purchased recently (2007 model).

Is there any reason why I should pay any more than MSRP for the bike and how negotiable do you think the freight is? The HD catalog says that freightis $290, but the dealer is charging near $800. Think I can get some help with the $500 difference? It's not my intention to swindle some kind of deal, but that $500 sure would help on my first upgrade (PIPES). Doesn't seem that theyshould make money on freight off me. Thanks for the replies!

What is their reasoning for charging $800 for freight? I would understand if it were Alaska, but to AR? Sounds likeadded profit to me. You sure the $800 does not include all fees excluding tax? This may be shipping and the backend "doc fee" (which all car and motorcycle dealers charge, but is really another form of robbery).

I just two weeks ago paid $1000 under MSRP and the usual freight for a WG at Earl Smalls here in Atlanta. They advertise that they will not be undersold, so I took in a printout of the lowest one I could find within a reasonable distance away from cycletrader.com.A quick check of cycletrader.com indicates that HD of Nashville is selling the Bob for$13,420 with usual fees ($290 shipping).

It's all negotiable. I got lucky with my Bob in November. It had 2400 miles on it. The guy bought it, did the stage1 kit, put some pegs and led tail light, then brought it back to trade in on a Road King. With the 07s out I was able to get it for $11,200. Still had a year left on the warranty. No freight, it wasn't new. They tried to hit me with $100 document fee, but I threw a fit and headed to the door. I even bitched because they sold me a new license plate, I wanted to transfer mine, but I compromised on that [sm=deal.gif]Tried to get them for a few oil changes but it wasn't happening. There are 3 stealers in close proximity. Nothing better than competition to help with negotiating. I had a 07 Super glide lined up at another stealer, but really wanted the bobber.

There are alot of dealers that dont even charge freight and setup. When you are about to sign say well we need to get rid of that crazy $800 numper you got there to bring it a couple states.

My experiences have been that it really depends on the dealer, part of the country, time of year, and how much inventory the dealer is sitting on (and have coming in the pipeline). I just bought an '07 Bobstah in Denim black just before Christmas, a demo with only 150 miles. The dealer ate the freight, set-up, and doc fees and then discounted another $500 off his normal price. Out the door it was $13,200. Of course, I went and spent the savings (and more - LOL) on pipes (bought on eBay), stage 1 intake, SERT, lots of doodads and some custom work done at the dealer before delivery (and they discounted all I got thru them plus labor charges another 15%). With the pipes wrapped, tombstone tailight installed, tank lift installed and all the rest it still was well under $15k by the time I got it home. But remember, this is in the New England where riding is seriously limited between Nov and April, service bays are genrally empty, and serious showroom traffic is down, so the dealers around here usually work with you for any in stock bike purchase. Come Spring, the best any will do is MSRP plus shipping and doc fees (if you can find the model and color you want!). And many will jack prices up another $500-$1500 depending on the model. Shop around and get your best price and show it to your dealer - and remain firm! The more you drool, the more they see a fool!
