Default Newbie needs advice duh

My 07 SB (just bought) is stock except for the V&H Big Shots. I did get some brand new shoes for it too. Right now my big complaint is the snorting and popping. She runs pretty fair but there is more carbon in the pipes than I like to see. My other complaint is the sound since MY break in period was straight pipes on the Sporty.

I am picking up parts on here as I can since I don't believe in financing the bike and I fit in the financially challenged arena.

So far I have a Dobek TFI ready to get hooked up. I liked this piece because of the price of course but I don't have a bunch of money to dump on a dyno. I like the idea of being able to tune it the old school way. (Just adjust the "jets")

I haven't ordered it yet but I am planning the Arlen Ness Big Sucker from Dennis Kirk and using my stock AC cover. Maybe cut it out later.

The questions. Any tips or comments on this plan or the TFI? Should I worry about cutting the cats (if I have them) out of the exhaust?

I don't think you'll be doing any " old school" adjusting of the jets. It has (E)ngine (C)ontrol (M)odule controlled fuel injection.

Go ahead and get your intake and then get your ECM re flashed to "adjust the Jets" to your new setup.

And, you don't have CAT on an '07 w/ V&H Big Shots.

I'm sure that some others more knowledgeable than I will be all over this in due time.

This place is a wealth of knowlege! Just be sure th turn on your filters.

Hope this helps

Best wishes....Tim(HT)

I had a 07 sporty 1200 with just aftermarket slip on mufflers that did a lot of snorting/popping like you are describing and a set of xieds from nightrider.com took care of it. But since you are planning on opening up the air intake later a tuner might be a better option. But there are people that have an aftermarket intake and exhaust that only have the xieds and they still work great.

Sometimes I don't express myself very well.

I have already bought the TFI.

By adjusting the jets, I didn't mean literally. I meant that I can adjust the pots based on the way it runs.

And there are people who have intake and exhaust mods, with no tuning changes whatsoever, and the bikes work great.

But if I thought I needed a fueling change beyond what the factory ECM can do, xied's would probably be my first try.

The soot in your pipes is not as much an indicator of your tune as your plugs. Your bike is set up to run lean and comply with EPA regs, so the plugs should be pretty white. No cats to worry about. Since you already have the Dobek, put it on and see how it runs. It should help, and when the time comes when you change the intake you will really notice an increase in performance.

Thanks Nevil. I won't do the TFI until I get the intake and will do both at the same time.

The reason I am looking at the AN Big Sucker is my indie recommended the K&N Filter but at the twice the cost of the filter I can do the whole intake so to me that was a no brainer. Or is it just no brain? Wouldn't the new back plate help the whole intake more than just a filter? Should I consider an open filter instead of the stock cover? I seem to remember in my fogginess that there was some kind of small ooze that come from the intake when I changed to the K&N filter only on my sporty.

Where do I find out about plugs when I get everything changed out?

Heres one of many websites that gives you a guide to judge your spark plugs http://www.classic-car-magazine.co.u...ide_chart.html

There's lots of threads here about plugs. This came from one of them:

The K&N filter is a good idea but I think you have to keep the stock cover for that since you retain the stock backing plate.
