Several weeks ago my used 07 FXDWG started following symptoms - speedo started flaking out and eventually quit at same time bike would NOT stay running at low idle. Also noticed considerably more backfiring when backing off throttle under power. Bike still runs fine(or seems to) under normal conditions but when speedo starts flakiness, low rpm idle roughs out as well.
Does anyone know if these two have same regulator/power source in the ECM? was thinking that they are related as they always occur simultaneously. Anyone know where i can get technicians manuals for the bike? Harley dealer very reluctant to part with info- as expected.
I had similar issues, speedo would cut out along with all the console lights. The bike would stall at idle and run rough. But I am not sure the two are related. I cleaned out the throttle body / air intake with some carb cleaner. Had a lot of grime from oil and dirt. Idling if fine now but still have the speedo cut out from time to time. May be corrosion on the contacts.
had the exact issue with my "10" fat bob..turns out it was the speed sensor located on the trans..checked the service manual wiring diagram and found that the sensor does more than just run the speedo..$60 for a new sensor and 15 min to change it out and it cleared up everything..runs great now.
