I ran into a problem a few days ago. Everytime I'm running at speed and then slow down to stop, the engine dies when I pull in the clutch and let fully off the throttle. It starts right up when I hit the start button and seems to idle fine. It also seems to run fine and has plenty of power when I hit the gas. If I continue to rev the motor while downshifting coming to a stop, it keeps running but seems to run a bit rough until I'm stopped and rev it a few more times. I have a V&H FuelPak and I checked to make sure it still has the correct data. It also is not supposed to affect zero throttle (idle) performance anyway. The Clymer manual I have doesn't mention this particular case in the troubleshooting section. Possibly a sensor or the ECM? I'm checking the plugs when I get home.
my 07 FB did that when I first got it. it was hardly ridden and had low miles. I cleaned the throttle body and IAC valve with carb cleaner and 19k miles later it hasn't happened since.
I've heard that the speed sensor can also cause these symptoms. Are your turn signals cancelling like normal and is your speedo bouncing or erratic? These are also symptoms of a bad speed sensor. The sensor feeds a signal to the ECM and controls fuel metering for specific speed/RPM.
I've had this problem, along with a speedo not registering speed. I replaced my speed sensor & IAC at the same time, and it hasn't happened since. I can only assume the speed sensor made the speedo work and the IAC made it stop dying, but maybe it was both. Either way, those run about $30 each, so I didn't mind too much.
Thanks all. The speedo and turn indicators are all working and I've had a stage one for 3 years. I also pulled the plugs and they look fine. I guess this weekend I'll start really digging in. It's supposed to be 100 degrees all weekend....great.
Been there, Done that! Had the same problem last year. Faulty idle Air Control Valve (IAC).
Here is an important clue. In the Harley Electrical Diagnostic Manual, it states that the IAC resets itself each time the engine is shut off and restarted.
Inexpensive item. Just replace it.
Second piece of advice, throw your Clymer Manual in the trash and purchase a Harley Service Manual. Much more precise.
Sorry to dredge this up after so long but I wanted to close the loop. I squirted carb cleaner into the throttle body and IAC valve opening, as mentioned by FroggyFatBoy, before replacing anything. It worked. Bike idles fine now. Thanks FFB!
