I am in the market for a new or late model used Super Glide. My question is why did H-D go to a heavier frame and forks in 2006? Was there a problem with the old setup? Thanks....
Yes, there was a problem. The old style would flex and they beefed it up to help in the handling department. I believe it should handle close to the FXR type frame did. The FXR's are still getting great handling comments from people that know them (including myself) and it is good to see the MoCo finally took notice and did something about it.
If I remember right the new frame and forks are on the 2007 models.
The 06 frame is now square and is very rigid. I really like that. The forks could use some better springs and heavier oil, but that's up to each to find his own setup.
I believe the factory beefed up the front forks due to marketing and the engine is ALOT more powerful these days. A 96 Twin Cam puts out a lot more power than the 80 EVO ever did.
Handling department....I personally do not think the beefier front forks have really made a big difference. Each model of Dyna is a little different though in terms of handling...a Low Rider handles different from a Super Glide for example.
The FXR's did handle awesome in their own way. They had the same setup as the Touring models did. I always liked the FXR...my last was the FXRT. I loved that bike and it will never be forgotten......
