I've had two Sportsters in 53 years of riding. One of them was a 2006 883L that I bought after an absence from riding. I've owned many LowRiders, long before they were called Dynas. For me, the Dyna's are great bikes. Don't own baggers anymore as I don't go on long trips but wouldn't be afraid to go on my '07 StreetBob. Definitely more stable in winds and more comfortable, not to mention a few other pluses. Go for it!
I went from a 1200 Sporty Roadster to a Low Rider. The Low Rider is easier to handle with the lower center of gravity and only weighs 85 lbs. more the the Roadster.
thanks for the response. exactly the guy I'm looking to talk to! So, you feel that your bob is much more stable in the wind than your 06 883L? I'll be honest. I love my 883L, and that's the only thing that bothers me. I am going to the dealership this coming monday. I'm looking for a deal, not a bath. I think these guys are more than willing to deal at the moment, but it will probably be a left over 06, not an 07. Any issues I should be aware of with the 06's?
Just did what you are about to do , loved my Sportster rode it on two 1000 mi. trips but rode a Street Bob and had to have it ! When you go to the dealer just talk , don't ride and you will be safe
I went from an '05 883 Custom to an '06 Low Rider and wouldn't go back for anything. The Low Rider feels much better on the highway. The only thing I didn't like on the Dyna was the mid controls but I've already taken care of that.
I have a 2003 1200C Sportster AND a 2003 Wide Glide. They are 2 completely different rides, and not just because the Sporty has direct mount engine, i.e. no rubber mounts. Both are great but if I had to pick one = it would be the WG. Smooth, fast ,.good for longer trips and a bit more stable in cross winds especially at highway speed. My bride rides a lot with me on the WG. It can handle 2 riders a lot better than the sporty.
Both have the stage 1 kit, the sporty Vance and Hines staright pipes, Great sound. The WG has stage 1 and the SE II exhaust- sweet but not as loud as the sporty.
Oh decisions, decisions, decisions,, My vote--- go for the Dyna.
I think these guys are more than willing to deal at the moment, but it will probably be a left over 06, not an 07. Any issues I should be aware of with the 06's?
thanks,
Rob
The 96 inch stroker engine on the '07's is the only difference between the '06 and '07 Dynas. You should stress that angle hard if you are negotiating for an '06.
The SuperGlide is the hot rod of the Dyna line and will most closely resemble a Sporty.
The Low Rider will drag something a little sooner than the others if you throw it hard into corners and twisties.
The Bob may well be the most comfortable, with the mini ape bars... especially if you add forwards.
Best thing to do is sit on them all and see what feels the best. Ask for some demo rides.
I loved my sportster. But my wife started riding with me a lot so I got tired of 2up on the sportsterREALLY fast. If I was riding solo exclusively, I would have kept the Sportster and just done a 1200 conversion and some other stuff. They make great little hotrods. ButI wouldn't keep it because I preferred the sporty, I like them both in different ways. But I would probably have kept my money because I didn't like the Dyna THAT much better.
I haveno regrets aboutbuying the Street Boband I truly love my bike. It rides great solo or 2up and has good power and handles good enough for my riding style. The extra heft is noticable at times (often to its advantage) and the lower center of gravity is often noticable as well. It's a personal call though.
Most people that go from sporty to dyna, don't ever go back. So that says a lot. Personally, I wish I could afford both. I still miss her . ..
My OL had an '88 1200 Sportster. When she got her '05 Lowrider, her first comment was that it rides pretty much the same except it's smoother and has more power. The Sportster got so little use after getting the Lowrider that she sold it a few months ago.
