1980 was the first year of the WG. It came with a black tank with red flames. It is not a Dyna and is AMF. Great find.

It's not a Dyna and is AMF? What do you mean? Could you please explain?

The AMF era was dead in 82 that was the first year after the buyback, so yours is an AMF bike. 1991 was the first year of the Dyna line, prior to that it was referred to as the wide glide because of the 41 MM fork tubes and the wider tipple trees. Because the Softail family was yet to be introduced in 1984 there was no need for the Dyna tag because the Softail was the minority being the new kid on the block. If any of this is not accurate you guys can let me know just pulling this out of my ***

AMF was the bowling ball company that bought Harley in the 70s and almost put them out of business. They really didn't put any new technology into the bikes other than the XR 750 racing bikes. The only real difference between an FL and an FLH was the bagger crap they put on them. When they came out with the Sturgis in 78 (I think) which was the precursor to the lowrider and the WG in 80 we were all thrilled. They even increased the motor size for the first time in years to 80". I was smoking a lot of dope back then so correct me if I have this wrong.

Where was this bike found? The bottom of a lake? haha Well good luck with it should be a good project in the end! I admire keeping the old school bikes alive. Wish I had the time and cash to do a restore project!

Lowrider was 1977 (i remember because i really wanted one but couldn't scrape the money together until 78) , Wiki gives 1980 as the introduction of the Sturgis but doesn't give a date for the Wide Glide . 80 ci engine was late 78 so overall your memory isn't that bad

Don't let the AMF talk scare you. It's still a Harley and it was built in Milwaukee just like all the others. My brother has a 1980 FXEF and he's got that thing running like new. And he's proven that it doesn't have to leak oil just because it's a Harley. Check out www.shovelhead.us Lots of great guys and good information there.

only reason AMF years got a bad name is because as noted above, they never put new technology into the bikes. they were pretty much the same throughout the AMF ownership.
on the bright side, they were still built with Harley technology so as far as im concerned, its just as much a Harley as any other. Very nice find btw. looks like its been sitting in some rain or snow. id thoroughly check the frame for any bad rust/rot. don't wanna be riding it one day and have it crumble underneath you!!

Bought one in GB at Mcoys on velp in 1984, paid 5000, had elec.&kicker, it had its problems, peddled it one year later for a Howe 3rd design late model. Member that kicker can bust your leg if you're a light weight like I was. They were a good looking lowrider.
