Default internal wires

i plan on putting some new bars on and plan to run the wires internal. is the best way to do this just cut them and sawder them back together. i dont think the wires are long enough right now, very close. also, i dont have blinkers or horn, so is there any reason to pull those wires though, basically will it mess something up to just cut them.
bike is 06 superglide

Cutting and soldering them with shrink tubing is an option, but if the wires are long enough de pinning the connectors is a better way to go. If you do have to cut and solder make sure to stagger the cuts so you do not wind up with a really thick section. Get some metal pull cord to use as a snake to help pull the wires through. I would also pull the horn and directional wires also incase you decide to put them back on.

yea might as well do the horn and blinkers. sometimes just lazy.
good advise on staggering the joints.

the bars i have now are basically the same dimensions as the ones i am putting on, just a different style. the wires are pretty tight now and i just dont see them making the turns interally and being long enough

There is a better way...tie your wires to a length of string and suck the string thru with a vacuum cleaner, then pull the wires thru the bars with the string...works every time!

My first set of apes (16s) I installed without extending the wiring harness. It was just barely snug. You have enough harness inside the backbone. If you're going with 16's or above, extend the harness.

Hell Hound, when are you planning to do this? I replaced my handle bars last Christmas break but mine is an '01 SG that is external wired. I have decades of experience with wiring things, mostly airplanes and cars, and I have lots of specialty tools for wiring repair, and have been looking for an excuse to ride to Austin...

Also...the way I read the inspection requirements, I think you are supposed to have blinkers and a horn for your year...you might want to check on that.

im not sure about that, mine is a superglide and came with really low flat track style bars. i have 12's on now and i dont think the wires will make it. when i put the 12's on i had to replace cables and break line and think i pulled all the extra wire out already

18 gauge. You can probably find everything you need at Fry's there in Austin.

My '01 SG had the original straight bars and was externally wired. I replaced them with OEM mini-apes for a WG. The handle bars were not set up for internal wiring and I didn't want to compromise the structural integrity of the handle bars by drilling into it so I wired it externally with snakeskin covering the wire bundles. I had to extend the wiring about 10 inches and there were no connector plugs on this year model, the wiring was a straight run to the connectors that were under the seat. I cut and solder spliced the extensions at the frame and covered it all up with shrink tubing before pulling it back into the frame. I also replaced the front brake line with one from a WG, the throttle control cables (although I may not have had to), and the clutch control cable.
