Wondering if anyone has had this same issue/symptom and could tell me if its anything to worry about:
So yesterday when I went to get on the bike I turned the power on, hit run, fuel primed, and when I went to push start...Nothing. The bike was in neutral, but I thought maybe it wasn't "all the way" in neutral. So I turned the power off, downshifted and back up to neutral, repeated steps and started up no problem. Chalked it up as nothing to worry about.
This morning leaving for work, I usually coast out of the driveway onto the street a little bit before firing it up so I dont disturb my roomies. Well I was coasting down the road, so definitely in neutral and same thing happens, push start and Nothing. I shifted into 2nd and pop started.
One more time today leaving for work, same things happens again. Now this is three times in less than 24 hours, so I am starting to get concerned.
Maybe your neutral safety switch isn't working.
Did you have the clutch pulled in when you tried to start it in neutral?
I know when this first happened I didnt have the clutch pulled in, and I dont think I did the other times either, and I cant quite remember the last time it happened if I pulled the clutch in and it worked. Horrible short term memory!
Anyway, I will be sure to keep track of whether or not I have the clutch pulled in, ill try first without it, and if that doesnt work I will pull it in and try that again.
If it is neutral safety switch, that doesnt sound too complicated so hopefully its an easy fix. I do have a manual and limited tools with me.
I'm not trying to hijack your thread haha but I have the opposite problem, my wg will start if it is in neutral but if it is in gear and I have the clutch pulled it will not start. I never thought it was a problem. Is something broken?
Check you battery connection and put the maintenance charger on it and see if it goes to green light in 24 hours. Jump to the simple first.
I had to go out to sea for a couple weeks, while I was gone I put it on a batter tender, within 15-30 minutes it was at full charge. It stayed on the tender till I got back and I have ridden everyday since then. I dont think it would be a charge issue, but could possible be that pesky ground cable that seems to pop up in threads every once in a while, I will check it out.

My Softail does not have the OEM seat. On the OEM seat on a Softail, least for 04, had a rubber button that held the battery snug. Until I drove a rubber wedge on two side of my battery, the terminal would get loose about ever 5-6 months.
Same symptom happened one time today. In neutral with clutch out and in. Shifted to second, pulled in clutch, fired up no problem.
I just got done checking the connections to the battery, all were snug (both ends). Visually inspected the neutral safety switch, pulled the boots, seems to be in good shape, but hell its not like I can tell if its working by looking at it.
I do have a question regarding the neutral safety switch though... If that switch is starting to fail would I still get the indicator light that I am in neutral? Because the "N" is illuminating.
Also wondered if this could be a possibility: I am getting close to my 15K service and clutch handle is starting to get a little sloppy, could that be the issue, just need to adjust the clutch?
Ok fellas, pretty sure the culprit is the clutch cable, too much play in it. This morning and afternoon when attempting so start, no go, I pulled the clutch lever in and let it pop out a couple times and manually pushed the clutch handle out to its fullest extended position, and it started up no problems. Have about 1/8"-1/4" (maybe a little more) of free play in the clutch handle when I release it.
Like I stated earlier, its about time for a service, actually about 1K miles over due. So this weekend I will be heading up to the hobby shop to take care of everything. If after adjusting the cable I still have the same symptoms I will start exploring other options.
