Default 2004 FXDLI vs 2006 FXDI

I'm looking at buying a used Dyna model and have narrowed it down to to choices. The price is basically the same on each, so I wanted to get some opinions here on the forum
1. 2004 FXDLI, 17k miles, 5 speed, forward controls, V&H slipons.
What I like about this bike is it's super clean, nice chrome, has nice long low look, original exhaust except for the mufflers (still has cross tube), power commander module installed. What I'm hesitant about this bike is the higher mileage, 5 spd vs 6 spd trans (suppose I could add 6 spd gear set), not sure i like the forward controls. I've only had mid controls but am comfortable on the highway pegs on my XL. (suppose I could move back to mid and add highway pegs)
2. 2006 FXDI, 7600 miles, 6 speed, mid controls, complete V&H exhaust. What I like about this bike is the low miles, 6 speed trans (I can easily see cruising 75-80 I87 in 6th), mid controls that I'm used to, highway pegs, quick detach back rest. What I'm hesitant about on this bike is pouring $ into customization of bars, foot pegs, etc. (you get the idea). Also, not sure about the modified exhaust. Does it matter much that the cross tube isn't there anymore?

The low rider is only about $500 more, but the MSRP was about $6k more so i'm not sure if it's a better value.

So I'm looking for experienced feedback here. Based on what you see, which would you buy and why?

Thanks,

Nick

No question I'd get the newer bike with less miles on it.

I would get the newer bike with less miles. I thought the 6 speed didn't come out till 07.

The 06 will have the six speed (first year) but also some had an inner primary bearing problem and a problem with the alternator coming loose; also the LAST year of the 88 inch, so actually kind of a crossover mongrel year...
The 04 sounds nice, but is a different frame and EFI then current; also an 88 and the 5 speed is great but the 6 is better if you are travelling 65+ mph lots...I'd be looking for an 08 myself...both will work but each has some shortcomings you will have to live with to save a few bucks...just my opinion...

I have a 2006 Street Bob. No problems as of yet. Did spend quite a bit on suspension and exhaust, intake, injectors, LED headlight & taillight, wheels plus the little goodies that look good including powder coating. I am still always concerned with the inner primary problems to rear it's ugly head. It's very reliable and handles like a dream for a 600 pound HD. I'm a mid control guy, just can't get used to my feet sticking out in front of me. I grew up on British bikes and took me forever to get used to left foot
1 down shift pattern on my bike. More control with mids.
Go with the 2006.

Default Well, the results are in!

Thanks everyone for the feedback and advice. I posted this on a few different forums and overwhelmingly the feedback was to go for the newer model with the fewer miles. Even with that advice, some noted past issues with the first year of the 6 speed trans. Even going so far as to advise digging a bit deeper for something a bit newer. So that's what I did, dug deeper in my pocket and just picked up an '09 FXD with 6k miles. She's all stock, so I'll have the fun of dressing her up in my own style. I've named her after my wife, "Bossie", cuz she's the boss and is going to KILL me when she finds out. LOL. Oh well...Here she is...

That was definitely the right choice, just picked up an 08 with 800 miles on it myself. Its not hard to find a low miles FXD, and put the stuff YOU want on it, best way to go!

Right on you made a good choice. Love all those garage queens sitting out there to pick up cheap.
