I really, really dig the looks of either the 14 or 16 inch apes on a 'Bob.....just seems "right" imo. But, tell me, are they as difficult to get use to as I imagine?
I put 16's on my bob, and love the feel and the look. This is my first bike, first time riding, and I haven't had any difficulty getting used to them. I knew I wanted taller bars, and after a month, I tilted the stock bars straight up, but still wanted more height, so I had them switched out to the 16's.
The guys who have and love the taller apes are obviously going to tell you they're great...but I have to say....I have the stock mini-apes (what are they...10"?)...When I first got the bike, I pushed them forward slightly....1) because I thought they looked cooler, and 2) because I wanted a little more room to stretch my arms out. Turns out, soon after I did that, I started getting a real bad case of numbness in my hands and fingers. No doubt the blood wasn't flowing as well with my hands higher up/further forward...and the result was severe discomfort...to the point that I couldn't ride on the highway at all (constant throttle) So I pushed them back and the numbness went away immediately.
I would suggest before buying that you push your stockers forward a bit...ride with them that way, and if you have no problem, then chances are you should be fine moving up to taller bars. In my case, taller bars would've undoubtedly caused me a real problem with comfort.
