I was adjusting the clutch and clutch cable on my 2007 FXDC Super Glide Custom as part of my 35,000 mile service. Have done this numerous times. Adjusted clutch - no problem. Went to tighten up the clutch cable and when I had it about right, I pulled in the clutch handle to see how it felt and there was a LOUD CLUNK that sounded like it came from the clutch handle assembly.
Now there is about 1 inch of clutch cable extending from the clutch perch and I cannot adjust the clutch cable at all. Adjusting the cable adjuster has no effect at all on the tightness of the clutch cable. The clutch handle just flops around.
Did I break something in the clutch handle assembly? Or did I break the clutch cable? How do I diagnose?
Check the ball and ramp assembly. I had a similar issue once, pulled the ramp off the ball and was unable to adjust the clutch cable until I took it apart and put it back together.
ball and ramp assembly is a possibility but not very probable. Is the cable broken. Just take a needle nose pliers and see if you can pull the cable lightly from the sheath. If it comes out it's broken. If not, the clutch adjuster nut could have come loose or striped out the threads on the clutch adjusting pate on the clutch.
Once you get in there, hold the case and assembly in your hand and ask someone to work your clutch. At the very least it has jumped over 1 détente of the ***** and isn't getting full motion. You will need to lift the top part off and rotate it back at least 1 détente then put the top half assembly back on and have someone work the clutch easily full range again.
Post your questions here as you do it, or send me a note.
I removed the clutch release cover. I moved the ball and ramp a bit and the clutch handle moved. So It does not appear that the clutch cable is broken.
Also, I have the ball and ramp assembly in my hand, but there is no working the clutch as there is way too much slack.
You lift the top half straight up. The bottom half should stay in the housing. After you lift it, you will look down and see 3 ***** in each of 3 détentes.
Going from memory, turn the top half counter clockwise at least 1/3 turn or 1 détente as you replace it back on the bottom half.
If you have loosened the cable for adjusting the clutch, you will need to tighten it back up.
