Default Stop the Rust?

Hey all,

I am starting to get some rust on my handlebars. Probably due to the fact that the bars are not that great of quality. I am able to clean it all off when I wash the bike and polish the chrome, but within a couple of weeks the rust will be back.

Looking for some tips on how to stop this from reoccurring and spreading. My initial thought was to put a thin layer of silicone after every wash on the trouble spots, a trick I used on ships with brass exposed to salt air. However, my landlord suggested to me to use clear fingernail polish. He is a wrench turner so I dont doubt it would probably help.

Any other advice you all could offer (besides buying better bars)?

Thanks!

Fingernail Polish is acrylic and works great for your application. I imagine the silicone would work well too. Plain turtle wax does a decent job, but needs re-application every couple weeks.

I been detailing this 05 SE Fat Boy since new. After I did it's first detail it came back with surface rust on the chrome wheels after winter storage. I cleaned them up and six months later it came back again with surface rust. I used Nevr-Dull on all chrome.

Harley's mags have real good chrome. I never saw this before.

I tried this product, Metal Gloss and the wheels after six years have not come back with surface rust. I get this bike back to detail at least once a year.

They say this stuff protects at least a year. I would apply this product on the chrome before winter storage and in the Spring.

I use the Metal Gloss and then the Metal Sealer on all bikes I detail.

I use Never-Dull also on all the chorme. Are you saying you use Metal Gloss now instead of Never-Dull, or you use it only when you do a thorough detail and before storage?

I clean my bike about every two weeks, its my daily rider and will not be stored for any length of time until next summer.

Most bikes come back once a year. These bikes are hardly cleaned all summer. I detail them before storage. They come back dirty with road grime all over the chrome. Since I've been using Metal Gloss I just use a mild soap and the dirt just rolls off.

When I get a bike in for the first time I use Nevr-Dull if there is any surface rust forming. If the rust is worse I use other products that are more aggressive. Metal Gloss works best when it is used after the chrome has been cleaned throughly. Then using Metal Gloss will protect the chrome from dirt, road acids and that surface rust build up when the bike is kept/stored in a humid environment.

After the first cleaning using Metal Gloss I don't use Nevr-Dull again. I don't know what would happen if the chrome was not treated more then a year or two.

I would use Metal Gloss once a year with the Sealer Gloss. Pick a month and do it every year at the same time. You would be wasting it if done every time you wash your bike.

I am not a sales person for Metal Gloss. I experimented with a lot of products. So far this has worked as advertised. I was told about this stuff from a guy that details airplane engines and the bright metal parts on planes.

Thanks for the info, I may give that stuff a try!

Yeah, thanks...I have a similar problem with every RSD button head bolt. They all rust and I've been fighting it off with Never Dull soaked q-tips. Gonna give Metal Gloss a shot.
