Lighter wheels will increase acceleration, Improve the suspension, brake faster and overall improve handling. On a "normal" racetrack the difference between stock wheels and carbon wheels, may be as much as 2-3 sec on a stock sportbike with a good rider.
As stated above, on a Harley I don't see the point. Many different mods will make your bike improve more, and be cheaper.
Because of the great advice you guys gave me I found and read this article. It's a good read. http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/HP2.html. The article suggests you bore the motor before doing the cams. I have the 96 cubic inch motor. Does anyone know what I should expect to spend on a project like this?
Did cams in two of my bikes before the big bore. It all dpedns on what you want to do and how much you avhe to spend. Call Hillside Cycle, Drago's, etc. There are plenty of quality engine builders that sponsor the forums.
In the BMX racing world, the weight weenies get all sorts of crazy about rotational mass... get some carbon fiber rims, titanium spokes, and carbon fiber hubs... that's got to get you a few horses!
I have to say it; It is a 600+ lbs bike...and you want to put "lighter" rims on it...to improve performance?? Let me give you my visual on that; ever hit a bar and see the really over-weight woman in tiny high heels...well that is the equivalent IMHO.
As stated previously, cams, engine bore, fuel management and the like...
only carbon fiber wheels that will fit your bike with minor mods are howards 16in wheels from motorcycle metal, and the blackstone tek (BST) vrod wheels 18x5.5 and 19x3, each choice runs $3500-$4000.
you in northern or southern CA? either way both areas have tons of good indy shops that can pump your motor up for you.
I would like carbon fiber wheels for these reason. The main reason of switching to aftermarket wheels is to reduce weight. It has been shown that a reduction of 2 lbs. of unsprung weight is the equivalent of as much as a 10 lb reduction of sprung weight.
Add to this the reduction in gyroscopic effect, which improves handling in cornering making it easier to turn into the corner along with improved acceleration, as there is less mass to accelerate. This is a no brainer. Look at any sport bike and you will see lighter wheels. Just my two cent
How about going on a diet. If two pounds less weight will do that, what losing ten pounds of body weight do? Then spend the 3-4 thousand on a big bore kit and cams.
