Default Internal Wiring Help!

Hi All,

Let me start with letting you know that I have searched and searched but have not been able to find an answer yet. I have a 2003 FXDL (Lowrider) and want to change the bars out. Currently I am running aftermarket drag bars that a backwoods shop in Cairo, Egypt installed, but I just picked up a set of 12" apes to open the riding position a bit.

Thinking this would be a fairly easy operation, I started by trying to disconnect the wiring that is currently run internally in the drag bars. All of my research tells me that there should be a couple of connectors located in the frame right under the front of the tank. After pulling the tank, I have found that the wiring connectors aren't there. It seems that the wires run from the bar components all the way to back to somewhere near the fuse panel.

My question is: Is it possible that there is no connector located near the front of the bike for each of the handlebar wiring? If this is the case, are there connectors that allow for a 'quick' disconnect between the bars and the fuses?

I appreciate any input you can provide. I have been enjoying the great info available on HD forums and hope that I can some day provide assistance vice asking for help. Thanks. -Dave

Hey bud, There are two connectors for each side, then 2 more for each signal. These can be accessed one of two ways: either through the neck on the side, or (in most cases) by removing the little plastic door that's under the frame under the tank.

You don't have to remove the tank most times, but instead unbolt it and either slide it back or prop it up so you can access the connectors underneath.

I would recommend simply removing the tank and it makes it easier to work and less chance of dinging something.

The connectors are in there somewhere inside the frame, just gotta dig around for them.

There are connectors just further back, on the 03 here is how you get the connectors, in front of the rear wheel is a black plastic cover on the front lower part of the fender, in there you will find a bundle of the harness, cut the tie wrap that holds it all, then from the front near the tank slowly pull the harness out, helps if you have someone giving you a hand to feed the harness as you pull it out slowly. It's a PITA but very doable, I here it is easier on the newer bikes.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info and encouragement. I will tear it down again soon and will look for the harness near the back this time. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out.
