The BCM is is a computer brain that controls everything electrical except fuel/engine electrics.
The good news is that BCM (and ECM) failures are almost always internal to the module and not indicative of other bike problems. In other words, your bike isn't a lemon, just the BCM.
Call your dealer, bust their ***** and don't hide your disappointment.
Check this link. It sounds like the BCM might be able to have a re-configure.

Make sure you write the code down when you see your dealer.
Good luck!

Don't bother replacing the tag, just make sure and let them know:
That you disconnected the battery, and,
You didn't cut any wires.
If they care at all about your business, they'll take care of it.
The best way to do it is to preserve the wires in the bars entirely.
Unlike the older versions, the wires can be disconnected from the internal of the TS housing.
Remove the TS from the mount.
Pop the lens off.
Slowly remive the internals in one of two ways.
- Pull the guts out the front with needle-nose pliers, or,
- Push them out with a punch from the stalk hole.
On the back of the plastic reflector, push a very small screwdriver into the wire slot and depress the curved metal spring. The wire will pull out with almost no resistance. Take your time and don't pull hard.
Then, all you need to do is cover the wire connectors with heat-shrink able tubing or tape (I prefer the HS tubing) and stuff the ends into the mirror-stalk hole. If you prefer, you can loosen the control housing and stuff the wires into the bars.
The only side-effect is that the indicator LEDs in your dash will flash faster than normal. If you want to fix this (not necessary) you can install a load equalizer on the wires you just stuffed into the housing.
I hope that makes sense. Sorry, no pictures.
